Church Posts 'Obama is a Muslim' Sign

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

The sign is staying up despite the fact that Barack Obama is a Christian.

A Wichita, Kansas preacher says he will not remove a message on his church sign that says "President-Elect Barack Obama is a Muslim."

The sign at Spirit One Christian Center reads "America, we have a Muslim president. This is sin against the Lord."

Obama supporters reportedly got into a shouting match with parishioners outside the church on Sunday.

Calls to minister Mark Holick's residence were unreturned.

What do you think of this sign?

I’m more concerned about the implication that we should *care* about the religious beliefs of our public officials than about the blatant falsehood. Hey, isn’t bearing false witness one of those, I don’t know, Ten Commandment thingies? Wouldn’t lying - and a very easily refuted lie - about the president elect be considered bearing false witness? You know, a sin against the lord?

I find it more troubling that this preacher is mixing his politics with his sermons. Preachers know better than to use their position to influence people in politic decisions. What’s even worse is that this man isn’t accepting what the nation determined. I am a Republican, so I was definitely disappointed when Obama was elected, but I got over it. You HAVE to get over it and move on. Obama is the next President whether conservatives (me included) like it or not. As a Christian, I believe that we need to pray for him, not bash him or bear false witness against him. I truly think that most Christians would agree with me and be embarrassed my the way this preacher is creating a bad name for Christians. I’m all about free speech, but when you’re respesenting something (God) other than yourself, you need to be careful with how you present yourself.

Kate, preachers, pastors and Fathers, have been mixing politics with sermons/preaching for decades, if not longer. It’s the main reason why I have not gone to church in many, many years. I’m disenchanted with the way churches are going… This sign is upsetting on two levels. One, it is mis-truth. I voted McCain, but even I know that Obama is not a practicing Muslim. There is the possibility that he might have been raised in Indonesia under the Muslim faith with his adopted/step-father, BUT, as an adult, clearly he has lived his life practicing the Christian-based faith. So the sign is incorrect. He is not a Muslim. Secondly, it is upsetting to think that someone who is Muslim absolutely could never be President of the United States, a country that developed out of the desire to have religious freedom. Muslim does not equal terrorist, and while I know that I would have a hard time voting a Muslim man or woman into office right now, given the climate in the world, I do hope that in twelve or twenty-some years down the road, that perhaps I, too, would feel good about casting a vote for someone who happens to be Muslim, if they were the right person for the job in all respects. I really hope that we can get to the point where their religion does not matter.

What about “Freedom of Speech”? If Pastor Wright has the right to say, “NO, NO, NO, Not God bless America, but G— Damn America”, doesn’t Pastor Holik have the right to present his “opinion”? Also, if it is patently false, then why is everybody so upset about the assertion that Obama is a Muslim? You must admit that if Barak Obama isn’t a Muslim name, it sure sounds like one. If his name were Barry Dunham, I don’t think there would be any question as to whether or not Obama were a Muslim. Why did he keep such an “ethnic” name, if he doesn’t still, in some small way, identify with Muslims? -Possum

If Barak Hussein Obama isn’t Muslim, then maybe what he wrote in his book is a misprint: From Audacity of Hope:’I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’ I’ve also found an interesting video that I would hope someone can prove to have false information. http://www.citizenslim.com/

What do you expect? This is Kansas after all. Hey isn’t he that preacher who protests at the funerals of American servicemen killed in Iraq and Afghanistan? You know, the one that says that God is punishing America for being too nice to gays. This is Kansas after all.

Actually, no he isn’t. In fact, even though he has no connection with the “Rev” Fred Phelps, I’ve noticed that nearly every story about Pastor Holik doesn’t fail to mention the Westboro Baptist Church! Guess, now Pastor Holik knows how Joe the Plumber felt! -Possum

I think this minister should be reading the right words like this of St. Thomas Aquinas: “How can we live in harmony? First we need to know we are all madly in love with the same God.” Dennis

Unfair! Muslims and Christians are supposed to be treated equally This is a racism promotion, its like your catholic kid would be teasing his muslim classmate/friend

I don’t think anyone could have said it better than Colin Powell. The correct answer is “No, he isn’t!”, but the right answer is, “So what if he is?”.

For the xenophobe who has an issue with Barack’s muslim sounding name, America is a country unique in that it’s foundation is rooted in the heterogenous mix of ethnicities and cultures of those who immigrated or were brought here. There is no monolithic bloc of people who dominate this society. With that said, it is fairly impossible to make inferences based on a person’s name only. Can you assume that someone named Rafiq Basaria is a hindu, someone named Shaquita Johnson is a baptist, or someone named Lenny Kravitz practices judaism? Pretty narrowed minded and borderline racist particularly when suggesting that someone should change the name given to them at birth in order to avoid connecting with a group of people. Being muslim has nothing to do with being a terrorist. Should every O’Brien, O’Malley and McCormick change their name in order to avoid being lumped in with the Irish and subsequently the IRA? Sounds pretty absurd.

Possum asks: What about “Freedom of Speech”? … doesn’t Pastor Holik have the right to present his “opinion”? . Nobody is suggesting that Holik has the legal right to tell this lie, and it is dishonest of Possum to suggest that anyone is trying to take away this right. . However — if someone insists on putting a big lie up on a big roadside sign, they should expect to be called a liar. People like Holik and Possum discredit others who may want to criticize Obama for legitimate reasons — they make it look like the critics of Obama are kooks, which ponly makes Obama look good.

Matt: Yes, I believe he said that. And so what? I stand up for Jewish citizens when they’re faced with anti-Semitic hatred, but I’m not Jewish. Defending people’s rights who happen to be of a different faith isn’t exactly a new thing.

Yet another reminder of why I’ve quit religion. Or why I’ll never live in Kansas….

I think this is shameful and ignorant. First of all, the guy knows Obama is not a muslim. Second of all, even if he was Muslim, the sign is offensive and discriminatory. American muslims have rights just like anyone else. This is America! That sign is an offense to God if you ask me.
