Congresswoman Knocked Up

Monday, November 24, 2008

Democratic Congresswoman Linda Sanchez of California will likely become Congress' first unwed mother and single mom.

U.S. House Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee Chairman Linda Sanchez

39-year-old Linda Sanchez is poised to become only the eighth Congresswoman in history to have a baby while in office, and the first to do so while single. She is due May 21.

She is "unofficially engaged" to Jim Sullivan, a government and PR consultant and the divorced father of three boys, and the two are looking to buy a house. But she says that she was told by doctors that if she wanted to have a baby, there was simply no time to waste.

"I'm established in my life. I have a career. I'm financially stable. I have a loving, committed partner. This is something that was planned, not something that was accidental," she explains.

Critics worry that Sanchez's pregnancy sets a bad example for teen girls everywhere (think Juno, Bristol Palin, Jamie Lynn Spears). Her supporters don't see what the big freaking deal is. How about you?

Who cares? The baby will be loved and taken care of and that’s all that really matters.

A 39 year old established woman is nothing like Juno, Bristol Palin, or JL Spears! This woman is professionally established, secure in her relationship with someone, and pushing 40. If anything, it tells teens to wait, to become something in life. As well as the fact that I don’t find it to be such a bad thing to be a single mother. Single fathers aren’t looked down on as much as women. If nothing else, it’s empowerment at this point. Just because a woman hasn’t settled for some man doesn’t mean she can’t have a family, especially if she can support one. Yes, both parents is the optimal situation, but is in no way the only way to raise a child. Kids of single parents aren’t necassarily doomed for eternity.

I wonder if the same people who thought Sarah Palin was going to neglect her child by running for VP feel the same way about a Congresswoman???? Probably depends on which party she belongs too. Democrat, OK. Republican, NO.

How can a 39-year old successful congresswoman in a committed relationship be compared to teen pregnancy? Apple & Oranges.

I agree with moms4palin. How is it okay for this lady but not for Sarah Palin who has other children that were older and a husband to help out? I have no problem with single moms, I just think that if Palin was being knocked for having a young one, then this lady should as well. Maybe even more since she is single. I totally respect her and her choice and hope she does well.

I don’t think most teenagers pay enough attention to Congress for it to have any impact on them. As far as the Palin thing goes, I’m not sure how she got brought into this conversation. This is about a Congresswoman having baby while in office and single. More power to them both, as my mother used to say.

Women are waiting too long now to have babies. On NPR they said your body’s ability to have a healthy baby peaks at 22. Our society needs to be more accommodating of women having babies so they don’t feel pressured to wait so long in order to have a career, too. The attitude has been for so long that you can have a career, but only if you fulfill all your other responsibilities, too (reminds me of Cinderella and going to the ball). Men get to have their career and make it their main focus. If they “help” at home, it is considered extra. Good for her for having the baby. Marriage is becoming outdated anyway. Relationships are what is important.

AJ - If you don’t care, why are you reading an article about it? … and why are you leaving a comment? are you angry that the writer wrote this article?

Would you be asking this question if a single congressMAN had gotten someone pregnant?? Probably not. Questioning a woman’s ability to work AND raise children takes us all back to a time when women were only hired if they weren’t planning on having kids and when they got fired getting pregnant. Articles like this, on a site for moms no less, are irresponsible and degrading to all women.

There is NO law anywhere that states you have to be married to have a baby. If there were a lot of people would be in jail. WHO CARES! The people who are against this kind of thing happening need to get a life and butt out, ITS NONE YA!

I think its great that she is having her baby when she wants to, the baby was planed, and is going to be very loved. I dont think that her not being married should have a thing to do with it. If I had to do it all over again, I too would have chosen to be an unwed mother. It would have been so much easier.
