On November 4th, some of us will be going to the polls confused. You may know WHO you're voting for, you just don't know WHAT you're voting for. On every ballot, in every state, voters will have to decide on specific measures in areas such as same-sex marriage, stem cell research and energy conservation. But how do you decipher and navigate through what they all mean and which way to vote? Is it "yes" on NO? Or "no" on YES?
Here are some of our resources and recommendations for how to make sense of all of these propositions and measurements:
1) Definitions Help! Proponent: one who argues in favor of something. Opponent: one that takes an opposite position.
2) Check out who endorses the measure: You can sometimes decide which way to vote based on the people and organizations in favor or against the said initiative. For instance, if you lived in California, and you align yourself with the beliefs of the Humane Society, then you would vote YES on Prop 2, which would prohibit the confinement on a farm of pregnant pigs, calves raised for veal, and egg-laying hens in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs.
3) The League of Women Voters: This website provides nonpartisan information to the public with both general and state-specific information on the many aspects of the election process including ballot and state measure information.
4) Smart Voter: Provides voters with comprehensive nonpartisan information about the contests on their ballot in an easy-to-use presentation.
5) Ballot-Pedia: A website that functions like Wikipedia where you can find ballot measures sorted by the political or social issue. The issues are broken down for each state and each category (description, support, opposition, etc).
Either way, exercise your rights and VOTE!
