Here's what Lisa had to say.
I could barely breathe as Barack Obama took the stage to give his victory speech. With cinnamon skin, full lips and coarse hair, he could be my brother and she, Michelle, could be my sister. "Could this really be true, is it actually happening in my life-time?" was the question that kept bouncing around in my head. I've always felt as if I missed the opportunity to take a bold stand with John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and the other change agents of our time. But tonight, I was there and I could barely breathe from excitement. I understand as an African American woman that this victory stands on the backs of every black and white person that prayed, spoke out and even died for justice and equality. Tonight I cried for them, for the victory that they did not get to see. I laughed and toasted for them as well.
Tonight I asked my thirteen year-old son, Jelani, what did Barack Obama's win mean to him and he responded with a huge smile showing every angle of his braces possible, "Mom, you've always told me that I can be anything, but now I have real evidence in Barack Obama." Barack gives us all, not just African Americans, but the human race, something that we have lacked for a very long time, hope! He inspires me to say and really mean the words, "Yes We Can!!"
With tear filled eyes, I wrote a poem for him:
Barack Obama, you have been raised for such a time as this
To help this nation move from a slow crawl to a powerful stand
You have stood with integrity, strength and grace
You inspire us to say, "Yes We Can!"
You are a role model to the many that watch your life in awe
Not just African Americans but all women and men
You quench the thirst of a dehydrated nation with a new hope
You inspire us to say, "Yes We Can!"
I am grateful to see this day come, when a man is not judged by the color of his skin
When the content of your character brings forth a greater plan
When you, your beautiful wife and precious daughters can step gracefully into the White House
And teach a nation how to say, "Yes We Can!!"
