The First Lady-elect is scouting out private schools where 10-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha may attend. This morning she toured the White House with her husband and President and Mrs. Bush. Here are the potential pre-K thru 12 schools that the fifth grader and second grader could attend, according to the Washington Post.

Why can’t the girls go to school with the rest of the middle class kids in D.C.? Aren’t the schools up to the future first lady’s standards? Maybe she should request a voucher! Oh, I forgot, the President-Elect doesn’t support school vouchers! Good thing he is rich!! Sorry all of you average middle class citizens of D.C., you are stuck in the worst school system in the nation!
I would place my daughters in the best school that I could afford. As a parent your first concern is the safety of your children. I am sure that the Secret Service can provide a safer environment for them in a smaller sized school.Anyone who has something negative to say about this obviously is childless.

This is not true. Jimmy Carter’s daughter, Amy, was placed in public schools when he was in office as he did not want to be a hypocrite. Obama could stand to take a few lessons from Carter in that respect. I highly resent that Obama will no doubt be in the public school teachers’ union’s back pocket & yet will send HIS precious darlings to private school. His kids should have to put up with the same atrocious public schools that the rest of us have to deal with.

While it would be symbolic for them to attend public school, it would be a nightmare security-wise. Private schools are used to handling children who have security detail with them and can coordinate with the officials how to do it so they can have as normal a learning & growing situation as possible. Imagine those two sheltered kids in a public school where anyone can access them and the potential for harm is great. Think of the numbskulls that would call in bomb threats because they can, or the thought of someone trying to kidnap them while they are on a field trip with their science class, imagine the parents of the other kids as well as the children themselves having to endure that. If anyone feels otherwise, they should offer to take the next four years off to assist with providing security, and maintaining a sense of normalcy for the other students as well as the staff and teachers.

I would like to know who will pay for this and if it’s us, the taxpayer you better believe there had better be alot of letters written because I won’t stand for it. If Palin can’t have her wardrobe then by God, Michelle isn’t going to get her 50,000.00 a year scholarship for her girls either. She can home school them like I do.
First of all, President Elect Obama will be doing a job that he will receive a salary for and how he chooses to spend that money is HIS business! No one criticizes what you do with the money you work for so why are you doing it to him?! Second, if you had the money to send your children to private school, there is no doubt in my mind that you would, just like I would and ANY other caring parent would! Third, for the safety and well being of Malia and Sascha, I think private school is a VERY good choice, most likely there will be other children with secuirty as well and they will not feel ‘different’ from the other kids. They can feel like a ‘regular’ kid just going to school.

You seem a little bitter that the first family can send their kids to good schools..I just want to remind you that the Obamas because of their hard work and brillant education can afford the tuition and then some…and oh by the way, you could only wish that you were a Princeton undergraduate and a Harvard trained lawyer mom who cared so much about her kids. Your right that would be the best education those girls could get. Just think all that and your dad is president of the US …It doesn’t get any better then this
But you all are missing the point. This is a man who will push socialized public education to the hilt. He will oppose school vouchers with all his might but HIS precious children shant see the inside of a public school. People, it isn’t about him spending his money. It is about the hypocrisy of his aggresive support of socialized public education. He will expect other people to put up with a substandard education, but he sure as heck won’t have anything to do with it. Yep, Lynn, I home school, too.
The first family has the right to do what they wish with their own money. The people who are complaining are obviously trying to find fault with everything about the Obama’s.
Yes, the Obama’s should make a choice for the best education they can afford. My husband and I made sacrifices for our children because they could not get what they needed at our local public school. Heaven knows that Obama could not be where he is if not for a superior education of his own choosing. We all have choices and if Judy choose to home school because public school (or otherwise) wasn’t sufficient then, so be it. I think he and Michelle are making the smart choice.
I am a professional who attended Montgomery co. Public Schools, nowhere close to a president - and yet I will send my kids to private school because I can afford it. It is out of preference - not out of necessity. I imagine this is the case for most parents who send their kids to private school. I can not knock the public system as this is where I got most of my early education.
Let’s not forget that as a parent, your first job is to protect your children. There is absolutely nothing hypocritical about the Obamas wanting to have their children in a small, safe, easy to control environment. No disrespect meant to the Obamas and their children, but as the leader of the Free World (an by extension the children of said leader) there are real safety issues and people are out there wanting to harm them. There have already been security and safety concerns. I commend the Obamas for putting their daughters’ safety ahead of proving a point or furthering a political agenda. Anyone who says that they would want to be true to their political beliefs before considering their childrens’ safety is a fool. And as far as President Carter…that was a different era. Things are a little different now.
The Obamas have the right to send their girls to the best school they can. Most presidents’ children go to private school, so why not the Obamas? If you have the money — and yes, Obama will receive a salary that he can do anything he wants with — then you will send your kids wherever you can afford.
It would be ideal, indeed, for them to be able to safely send their children to public school, as so many parents are forced to do. But realistically, they can’t. Not today. The children themselves would fare so much better, security-wise, in a private school. In public school they would stand out too much. We must think of what’s best for them, and not concentrate so much on semantics.
I am against vouchers not because I don’t believe all children deserve what a private education provides, but because, realistically, they could never reach more than a handful of children. And, private schools can accept whomever they want. They do not have to take everybody. And riddle this: You take the entire population of a troubled public school and place them in a newly-opened private school, without any of the obvious advantages a private school can afford to provide, and I guarantee you’ll have the exact same problems.

Judy - I take umbrage at your characterizing public schools as atrocious. Some are, some are mediocre, some good and some truly excellent. My children attended public schools which were excellent. They were well prepared for college (one got Harvard scholarships and financial aid and the other attended a public university). Both have their degrees and one is pursuing a PhD with help from a graduate school fellowship. If attending public schools means an inferior education it isn’t true in this community or in any others on the West Coast where family and friends have their children enrolled.
