Why has this not been a problem before with previous presidents? It seems to be a double standard when it concerns the president elects children. I wonder why? All of you that have a problem with President elect Obama paying for his children to attend private schools, please take a good, hard, honest look at the real reason and ask for God or the higher power that I hope you believe in, to forgive you and change your heart to accept everyone. Even if they are more intelligent than yourselves.

I guess I just resent the fact that the Obamas don’t believe in the public school system, OR in providing vouchers for those who need it. what about the poor, underpriviledged? Shouldn’t we share the wealth?

ps I have had my kids in both private and public schools, and I have taught school.

Obama’s family sacrficed to get him in the most prestigious private school in Hawaii. Michelle went to magnet school in Chicago. Amy Carter went to public school the first year Carter was in DC the next 3 yrs she went to private school. The experiment didn’t work. The security made it difficult for her and the other children.
I feel that any parent that would risk his or her children for politics I would not vote for. Unlike Palin had her children on the campaign trail as props for her ambition. Her 7 yr old admitted that she had fallen behind in school because of the campaign.

I’v met Michelle and Barak (I’ll change that to Mr. President in Jan) Reporters are allowed on public school grounds. Not so on Private grouds. I think the Obama’s would love to have the girls in a good public school systems but I believe their security is more important. Some sit and complain that they might be going to private school but just imagine, these are still young girls and will have to be going through the same thing any of our kids might have too go th

waaaa waaa waaaa! why does it matter? dont we have two wars going on? arent American lives being lost as we argue about where the president sends his kids to school. GROW UP AMERICA!!!!!!

Again, well stated Kelly and Kris.
And Lynn, stop complaining so much. Out of the heart springs the issues of life. My husband is a public school teacher and guess what? Our daughter attends a private CHRISTIAN school. You can pray and teach Jesus in private school. Not allowed to pray in public schools. Every family should have the priviledge of prayer alloted to their children while in school.

Homeschooling only creates weirdos.

Well said, Louise. The bottom line, though, is that Obama’s children are the very first African American first children and there is no telling what anti-Obama people are capable of. The girls are probably safest at a private school.

Are you guys kidding me? Those of you who are complaining about how the OBAMAS spend their money need to get a clue! They are sacrificing four years out of their lives and the lives of their children to work for us! Does anyone tell you how to spend your money?! President-elect OBAMA will receive an annual salary of $400,000! They can afford to send their precious little girls to any school they desire! …maybe you need to try to figure out how you allowed the mortgage companies to trick you into those adjustable rate mortgages and home equity loans!

Public school in DC was just fine for Amy Carter

DIDN’T REALIZE SO MANY PEOPLE WERE INTERESTED IN THE GIRLS SCHOOL OR EVEN THAT THEY HAD THE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHERE THE GIRLS WERE TO BE SCHOOLED. CONSIDERING THE GIRLS ARE LIVING HISTORY IT WILL MAKE THE DECISION THAT MUCH HARDER. WE’VE PUT EVERY PRESIDENT’S FAMILY UNDER A MICROSCOPE FOR FINITE STUDY. UNLESS YOU TOO ARE PLANNING TO SEND YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL IN DC OR SURROUNDING AREA I WOULDN’T THINK IT WOULD BE A MEDIA HOT SPOT. AS TO IMPROVING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BY THEM ATTENDING PUBLIC SCHOOL - IT SHOULDN’T TAKE THE PRESIDENT’S CHILDREN TO IMPROVE THE SYSTEM - THAT SHOULD BE EVERY PARENT’S GOAL.

We lived in the DC area for years, and eventually left because we could not afford to send our kids to private schools—and we were in the VA suburbs. The reality is that the public schools in metro DC are a tough sell—not because of the teachers; they were superb. In my child’ 3rd grade class of 18 kids, there were 6 with severe enough behavioral problems to disrupt class. Learning was simply not happening. I substituted in these schools, so I know. Where you send your kid to school is a very personal choice for each family—the decision should have to do with what is best for that child, not what satisfies a political agenda.

Laurie November 12, 2008, 8:43 AM

Mr. Obama and his sister went to an expensive private school in Hawaii- age 10 through graduation. Naturally he’ll choose the same for his kids.

Lili November 12, 2008, 10:54 AM

The Obama daughters have been attending the private University of Chicago Lab Schools, where their parents received a hefty (50%) tuition discount, because Michelle Obama was on staff at U of C. The student body is extremely diverse, in terms of backgrounds and income levels, and financial aid is available. They are not going to transfer their children from such a high-quality school to one of the very problematic public schools in Washington, nor should they. They are not required to turn their young children into a social experiment to please some members of the electorate.

Becca Rayne November 12, 2008, 10:58 AM

@Lynn and all the haters

Why would any president send their kid to a public school. These snide comment are really dumb because you know the great dangers of being a child of a president. Only a person with a very little brain would make such a childish comment. If you want to make a point about school vocuhers then make it. Don’t use the children and what school their going to attend for politicial bashing of Obama. I suspect your really mad that a black man won and that’s what these negative comments are really about. The man hasn’t even started the job yet and your insulting their school choice? Who the hell are you? Don’t hate the Dems for winning the white house..hate the republicans that made this all possible!

product of public school November 12, 2008, 12:43 PM

I for one hope the first-daughters-elect’s education enables them to spell correctly. I notice that most of your comments have misspelled words, incorrectly pluralized nouns, etc. For example, “the Obamas” is the correct plural when speaking of the entire family. “The Obamas’ choice of school” is the correct way to refer to the Obama family’s choice. I, too, would like to see them choose a public school but as one commentary noted, it would be a security nightmare!

Michele November 12, 2008, 1:35 PM

I think if I had a child in a school that was selected by the Obama’s, I would consider probably enrolling them somewhere else. And I would, no matter who the first child was. The crazy terrorists targeted a bus load of school girls in Iraq just this week. I would worry that their being there, would put my child more at risk.

Anita November 13, 2008, 4:24 PM

The Obama’s children were already enrolled in a private school (University of Chicago’s Laboratory School, a prestigious private school in Chicago), so why would he not want to continue what he started and was paying from his Senator’s Salary? The girls are not jumping from public school to private school, they are going from private school to private school.

Lou November 14, 2008, 1:05 PM

Remember the children are in Private school now, why should they go to public school to satisfy a few silly people that think their “tax money” is paying for Obama’s kids education.

People don’t become president because they need the money silly people. This man is already a millionaire just off his book sales, his wife left a salary of 280,000 a year, she made more than he did as a senator.

So regardless if he became President or not his kids will more than likely attend private school.

He wants to fix the public school system so YOUR kids can get a decent education. He realizes everyone is not able to afford private schools.

Lou November 14, 2008, 1:24 PM

And also remember that Obama paid 1.4 million in taxes last year(2007) alone, because he made over 4 million from Royalties from his book. I feel this amount will quadruple as more people are interested in him and I heard that his book may be translated into many languages.

President of the USA is for POWER!! NOT for money.
