The dos and don'ts of stepping into the voting booth.

Record turnout is expected at the polls for this historic election. Here's how to make sure you punch those chads with flair. For information specific to your state, polling locations, and registration status visit www.canivote.org.

DON'T be late
Polls are generally open 7 AM to 8 PM but it varies from state to state. If you're not in line before the polls close, you won't be allowed to cast your ballot.

DO be prepared
Be sure to bring identification of some kind. For most states, a driver's license (or other government-issued photo ID) is all you need.

DO bring the kids!
Why leave them at home when you can show them history in the making?  Myrna Blyth, founder of Take Your Kids 2 Vote thinks introducing your kids to the democratic process is "crucial" in nurturing responsible voters of tomorrow. "Simply taking them with you," says Blyth, "is really exciting and mysterious, even if they just stand there."

DON'T snap photos
In some states, the use of video cameras, still cameras and other recording devices -- including cell phone cameras -- is prohibited inside polling places unless you have news media credentials. Save the picture taking for your election day after-party.

DO keep your political opinions to yourself
Avoid getting into discussions with people in line about your politics or who you're voting for --  it might even be illegal, given your state's campaigning rules.

DO leave your political garb at home
When you head to the polls, if you are wearing campaign shirts, hats, or buttons you'll be asked to remove them before you can vote. But in San Diego, California, they've purchased several dozen paper smocks that voters can use to cover up any political messages. Check with your election office for the local rules, or simply just give the campaign gear a rest.
