You'd think after your 20s you'd be done with it. Turns out, many of us are still struggling with acne.
Acne can do a number on a kids' self esteem, but what happens if moms got it too? The truth is, acne can and does persist well into our 30s, 40s and even 50s, and, unfortunately, it's a bit more complicated than when your teens get it. What triggers adult acne and what can you do?
We talked to famed Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Letantia Bussell, who gave us the low down.
1. Many women develop adult acne during periods of hormonal changes, like pregnancy, post-pregnancy, menopause or even when stopping birth control pills.
2. Stress triggers acne. During periods of stress, the body produces more androgens (a type of hormone) which stimulate the oil glands in the skin, causing acne.
3. Acne can occur when using oily products such as foundation or lotion. Look for products that say "non-comedogenic" to prevent buying those types of products. Also, ask someone before buying foundation. Even if they say "oil-free", there may be certain types of oil in them.
What to do:
1.Topical treatments for acne include creams, lotions, gels, and solutions. A topical medication that combines benzoyl peroxide and a topical antimicrobial such as clindamycin or erythromycin can be effective for adults with mild to moderate acne. An over-the-counter product that contains sulfur also can help some adults. For aging skin, high levels of benzoyl peroxide may dry out the skin, so instead of grabbing your teen's tube, get your own.
2.Instead of your usual skin wash, use an anti-bacterial soap such as Safeguard. It will help wash away acne-causing bacteria.
3. When acne is accompanied by mood swings or anxiety, visit your doctor. She may suggest using an oral contraceptive to control the hormones.
4. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, as it can irritate the skin and make acne worse.
5. Stay away from using numerous masks/peels during the week. It can actually worsen the problem because oil glands will dry out and overstimulate causing more acne.
6. Do NOT pick! Aging skin scars more easily, and takes longer to heal.
Acne can be a sign of a bigger medical problem. If it persists, be safe and see your doctor.
