Are elementary schools safe anymore?
A 7-year-old elementary school student in Florida armed himself with a butter knife to rob his 6-year-old classmate, police say.
The alleged incident took place inside a bathroom at the Pine Lakes Elementary School in Miami. According to police, the first-grade student stole cash from his alleged victim.
The victim's nose started bleeding during the encounter, which has been classified as an armed robbery, schools police operations supervisor Craig Kowalski said.
The victim's mother reported the incident to school officials Monday, when classes resumed after the holiday break. The boy did not have any visible injuries at that time, school officials said.
The 7-year-old likely brought the weapon from home, Bromery said. He is serving a 10-day suspension and will likely be expelled to an alternate school for children with discipline problems.
"I don't know that I would call this bullying ... I would call it juvenile delinquency," says bullying expert Ross Ellis of Love Our Children USA. "I would take a look at what the child is watching and what sort of video games this child is playing. I want to go and shake the parents and say, 'What are you teaching your child?' He is obviously learning this from somewhere."
She says this behavior needs to be nipped in the bud NOW. "His parents need to get him help immediately if they ever want him to someday be a healthy, responsible adult," Ellis says.
