Before you wax, trim and do your own color, these beauty horror stories will make you think twice about what to skimp on.

woman dying hair

We all want to save money right now, but there are just some things that MUST be left to the professionals:

Julie: Hair color! I have tried to dye my hair myself and it never turns out pretty. One time I had a pile of red dye on my hair when my dad asked me to follow him down to the mechanic's so he could get a ride back. I ended up getting into a car wreck and the cops said, "OHMIGOD, she's bleeding!" It was the red hair dye running down my forehead. I was mortified.

Melissa: Bikini Waxing. I once got all thrifty and thought I could wax my own bikini line ... well, that didn't work out so well. I literally glued my (vaginal) lips to the toilet seat and had to hack them loose with a knife. After I freed myself from the seat then I had to rip the hardened lump of wax off. To say it hurt is an understatement: PAY, PAY, PAY to have a pro give you a wax down there.

Jill: Flat irons. I learned the hard way that the budget priced flat irons destroy your hair and can cause early baldness!!! Spend $100 or more, you won't regret it.

Talitha: Highlights. It may look pretty and easy on the box, but it's not! I used a highlighting kit and left it on extra long (so I could be REALLY blonde). When I washed my hair I had fluorescent orange highlights all over my head. I went into complete panic and poured a brown dye over it, because I couldn't afford to have it fixed. I then looked like a leopard. I ended up having to borrow money to get it back. Awful.

Annie: I waxed my own uni-brow, but the wax I used got too hot and it pulled off an entire section of my skin. Right on top of my forehead. Never again.

I disagree about doing hair color yourself. I’ve been getting mine done professionally for at least ten years — I’m in my late 40s now — but times are tough. There’s nothing wrong with doing a root touchup in your natural color, carefully, every once in awhile. But I agree: no highlights, bleaching or new colors!!

i disagree with the unibrow thing, i shaped my own eyebrows, and (strangly enough) when i tell people i do my own, they ask me to shape theirs as well.

I color my own hair every couple of months to save on money, I’ve never had a hard time of it. I’d never attempt highlights or a drastic new color though!
I do 100% agree on the no-self-bikini wax thing though! OUCH that had to hurt!!!
