Is Chuck E. Cheese's Really Chuck E. Diseases??? Part 2

We called Chuck E Cheese's headquarters in Irving, Texas, and spoke to company spokesperson Brenda Holloway about what we found. Here's what she had to say:

chuck e cheese and bacteria

"We clean and sanitize our games every night with an antibacterial sanitizing solution called Sterbac Blue. We try to inspect and maintain during the day as well. We have a large amount of kids who come through here, and with them, a large amount of bacteria. We try to keep up with it."

After getting the results from Dr. Germ we were so freaked out that we went straight to momlogic's pediatrician (and mom of two) Dr. Cara Natterson to find out what this mean for our kids ... and us. Here's what Dr. Cara had to say:

It's worth noting that one of the bacteria found on high chairs and tables -- enterobacter sakazakii -- can cause serious infection in a young infant. This is yet another reminder that if you are tempted to take your newborn baby out of the house, a crowded restaurant is not the place to go.

Chuck E. Cheese's is really just an example of a kid-destination, a place designed to combine dining and family fun. Though the results of this study are specific to Chuck E. Cheese's, the idea is to apply the concept to kid restaurants that double as play spaces. Given the runny-nosed populations that flock here, I don't think anyone will be too surprised to find that bacteria lurk in these types of establishments.

Check out what we found at Chuck E. Cheese's. Yuck!

As a mom, these bacteria sound alarming and scary. But as a doctor, I haven't ever seen a serious or life-threatening infection that can be clearly traced back to a kid-friendly restaurant.

So take this all with a grain of salt. Personally, I almost never take my kids to these places, so that when I do it is a major treat. And I pretty much stay away during the cold and flu season.

So how can you protect your children (and yourself!) from picking up bacteria at kid-oriented restaurants? Here are Dr. Cara's top five tips:

1. Hand washing, hand washing, hand washing!
Make sure your kids wash their hands before they eat. And it's fine to use hand sanitizers or wipes to clean off the table surface or high chair--but thorough rubbing is necessary. Don't just splatter on the Purell.

If they play after the meal, have them wash again before going home. This is especially important for thumb or finger suckers and nose pickers.

2. Wipes
Wipes are a great second line of defense, but really shouldn't be used in lieu of hand washing. Still, if there's no bathroom, wipe the hands thoroughly.

Also use wipes if the table (or especially the high chair) looks gross.

For babies, you can buy disposable plastic high chair tray covers that tape onto the tray and keep your child's food a lot cleaner. These are very easy to find in most grocery stores.

3. Avoid crowded kid play spaces during cold and flu season
This is not a news flash -- when a place is crowded with kids who have runny noses and coughs, you want to keep yours out of the mix.

4. Bring your own toys
Crayons, matchbox-sized cars, and legos are good examples of toys that you can keep in your purse or diaper bag and pull out for your child when things get a little boring.

At a place like Chuck E. Cheese's, crayons don't compete with rides. But there are plenty of other restaurants where having your own distraction helps.

5. Remember, timing is everything
I like to take my kids out when they are hungry, or time their snacks so that they'll want to eat when they arrive. That way, the likelihood of play before eating (and getting germs from toys on the hands) goes down.

Im 12 years old and seriously, im not surprised. I go to school everyday,my mom runs a daycare at our home, and I used to go to chuck e cheese when I was around 10 yrs old. You’d think i would be sick? Yeah, But you know what! Im pretty sure there are germs everywhere. Especially in school. Why not keep me in a bubble? “tsk, tsk”

OK….I take my kids to Chuck e Cheese all the time…Yes, they get sick. But really IS it that place? Could it be from many other places they go? Germs are everywhere. Door knobs, keys, money…You cant keep children locked up because your afraid they might get a germ. It could happen anyway. I am so scared that my girls would get sick, and they have, but I will not keep them from enjoying their childhood because of my fears. Just keep it safe. Make sure they know how to wash their hands and let them have fun.

I do not have complains over CEC, my son (5) loves it and we take him once in a while every month or so, and he has never get sick. BUT we always make sure he washes his hands BEFORE eating in there and BEFORE going back home. He knows the rules….just be careful with this. They should be ok. He did get sick at the McDonald’s playgrounds twice, really bad fever and stomachache, just 24-48 hrs. after visiting there. We have never gone back there, because it actually looks dirty, but our CEC in Ohio, looks pretty clean all the time.

Germs are everywhere… We need to practice hand washing. Does anyone take their child to the doc during flu season? I am sure there are nice things you can pick up in a doc’s office too!!

I have a son with autism who insists on putting all kinds of things in his mouth, licking doors, picking up straws that have been on the floor to chew on, etc. When he first started this behavior I was a bit freaked out, but realized that there was no way to shield him from the dirt and germs. Let me tell you this…..when my other son brings the flu home from school, the child that eats dirt is the only one in the family that DOESN’T get sick. His constant ingesting of these germs has made his immune system very strong. He does very well.

I’ve only ever been to CEC once when I was a wee lad. It was fun and I’ve always been mad that we never went again. I guess it was too expensive or something. But anyway I clearly remember not washing my hands once and I never got sick. That’s because like others have said, my immune system wasn’t destroyed by anti-bacterial nonsense, which by the way, kills the good bacteria too, you know, the kind that we need, to live.

Why is this website sexist? I’m honestly offended. Whatever, you moms got it all figured out so I’ll just drink a beer and watch the game. That’s all I’m good for I guess.

I had a scientist come out and swab my minivan… He didn’t find anything close to what they found at Chuck E.s Seriously, I am now wondering about other family friendly restaurants that have play areas for kids. My nephew got food poisoning from a Chuck E Cheeses and they still take him back every year. Thank you for this informative article. I now know that what to avoid. There are simply too many places (that are still clean) to take my four children - to even consider going back to Chucks.

Yes these bacteria are priminent and no one is being overprotective. problem is places ARE NOT sanitized as they say they are. L.A Fitness child care where i work say they clean their stuff nightly and no one does. i got in trouble for cleaning things while kids were there too. We made a game of it. What a joke all the moms applauded the cleaning and teaching their kids to wash hands and clean is the best they said.

The money that you spend there has more germs on it than you would find on any of the surfaces at any given moment. Think about it.
