According to the U.S. Education Department, 1 in 7 American adults are illiterate.

Thirty-two million U.S adults lack basic reading proficiency and are unable to read a chapter in a book or even a newspaper article. ProLiteracy, an organization that promotes reading programs for the disadvantaged, estimates that there are 774 million illiterate people worldwide.

David Harvey, The CEO of ProLiteracy, says the declining literacy rate in America presents a challenge for the one million people who lost their jobs in 2008. "A large number of the unemployed are low-skilled individuals who struggle with everyday reading, writing and math tasks. The administration wants to create new jobs with the stimulus packages, but to take advantage of those new positions, these adults need basic literacy skills".

Research shows that parents who are illiterate or have a low level proficiency are likely to raise children who are poor readers as well, which of course only continues the cycle.

In this day and age, there is basically no excuse for an adult to be illiterate, with the exception of reading or mental handicaps. If an adult WANTS to learn to read, send him in to any school or library, and he should have plenty of people willing to teach him how (free of charge, btw).
It seems you can’t get anything for free, but if someone needs help learning to read, send him this way. My family would be more than willing to help. And if we all pitch in, this problem will be gone in no time.

Actually, there are adult literacy centers all around the country. Most charge nominal/symbolic fees so that students are invested in their education.

I work at a literacy center in Milwaukee, and the one thing we have in common with all other literacy organizations is that we are always short of volunteers. Search ‘literacy’ or ‘adult literacy’ in the city/county you live in to find out more.

There are actually lots of reasons that children’s reading skills are disrupted to the point that they become non-reading adults. Although it should not ever happen, it often does.

I hope you’ll take that step to tutor just one person, because that is how we can reduce adult illiteracy.

So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If attainable, as you turn out to be expertise, would you mind updating your weblog with more particulars? It is highly useful for me. Massive thumb up for this weblog submit!
