Army Sends Shocking Death Notices

Friday, January 9, 2009

Letters mailed out last month to honor fallen soldiers did not have their individual names on them. Instead, they were all addressed: "Dear John Doe." Military moms respond.

The Army mistakenly sent 7,000 letters to family members of soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan, addressed "Dear John Doe." Momlogic talked to Molly Morel, president of the American Gold Star Mothers (an organization that supports moms who have lost sons or daughters in the war): "Had I gotten the letter, I would have picked up the phone and said HIS NAME WAS BRENT," says the mother whose son Brent was killed in action in Fallujah. "I would have been foaming at the mouth. But then I probably would have realized that they are just human beings, too, and they didn't mean any harm by it."

Army mom Ursula Pirtle, who lost her husband when her daughter was just an infant, said "receiving this letter would be extremely unfortunate. A grave mistake. Accidents happen, but how family members will take this letter really depends on how far they are in their grieving process."

Merrillee Carlson, whose son, Sgt. Michael Carlson, died in Iraq on January 24, 2005, is expecting to receive a letter any day now. "While it's a simple mistake, it is a very tragic mistake," she says. "The indication that anyone would perceive that a hero is not significant, that they would not direct this personally to them, is shattering."

Momlogic also talked to a spokesperson for HUGGS, an organization supporting Gold Star Families. Debi Busch, whose 23-year-old son has been in Iraq for 18 months, says: "Death is so hard. This is very unfortunate but they are doing what they can. These are families we all know and they are already carrying the burden of war. We lose our communities when a soldier dies."

Army Chief of Staff George W. Casey Jr. is sending personal apology letters to the 7,000 family members. Army spokesperson Paul Boyce made the following remarks: "Obviously this is insensitive and we want to apologize." Boyce also mentioned the letters were a glitch in the system, an accident: "The intent of the letter was dedicated to honoring loved ones and listed support groups, such as HUGGS, for family members of the fallen. The letter is dedicated to honoring loved ones and recognizing their sacrifice and commitment."

Obviously they did not forget his name. It was a human clerical error. Humans make mistakes. Is it an unfortunate mistake..YES. But, it was not like they didn’t try to apologize once they noticed it. And I am sure that someone lost their job or got a huge demotion for that error!
