Is winter break anything but a break?

byebyebus.jpg

When one mom came into the office today in tears, we were concerned. But when she told us they were tears of joy that streamed down her face as soon as her kids were dropped off at school, we totally got it. After two plus weeks with a house full of kids, we anxiously look forward to getting the kids back to school and getting us back on track. What sounds blissful before vacation begins -- all the unstructured time and lack of schedule -- becomes the very thing we dread. Suddenly, back to school is the real vacation!

Parents constantly complain about their kids' crazy schedules and all the activities and homework they have and how they just need some time to decompress ... and as soon as they get the time, they complain that the kids have nothing to do and nowhere to be.

What does vacation mean to you -- unstructured family time or kids back in school?

I feel for this mom. I live in New Hampshire where we had a terrible ice storm and the kids missed 6 days of school. Add in weekends and holiday break and I’ve had my kids home for 22 days. Then this morning there was a 2 hour delay for alot of schools in the state due to ice. Luckily it wasn’t in our town. Forget the chores…the dishes are going to remain the the sink. The laundry will remain in the dryer (after all I can always spin it again later to get the wrinkles out). DVR here I come. I am going to take my mini-mommy vacation very seriously. Today is my day. I vow to catch up on General Hospital (and not just the good parts). I will watch tv in peace. I will eat a meal in peace. I might just stay in my pj’s for the rest of the day. Amen for public education.

I think it is sad that moms are so anxious to get their kids back to school. My kids dont go back until wednesday and I am sad that I only have 2 more days with them. You can still have structure when they are home. YOu had your kid, why be so anxious to get rid of them? When they are 18 and out of the house, you are going to be wishing you had more vacation days with them!!!

Sarah I completly agree with you! It is sad, these poor moms would rather have time to themselves then spend it with thier families? I am a stay at home mom and have a 2yr old, a 3yr old and a 6yr old. My 6yr old is in kindergarten and I miss her when she leaves everyday. My favorite time is when were all together. Id be in heaven if I had them for 22 straight days. But I also agree with Hollie too, sometimes it can get to be too much! And I do get upset when I miss my desperate housewives!

Don’t get me wrong I LOVE my children. My one purpose in life is to have a family. I’ve just had enough of the bickering and whining. It’s been so cold here that out door activities are not easy at all. Never mind being without power for 4 days (we’re lucky though. Surrounding towns lost it for 9). And with the financial crunch from the holidays the almighty dollar is stretched to the breaking point. It’s just hard when you’ve run the race on all the crafts and games and the words “I’m bored” are all the words my daughters(12 and 7)seem to say. We did alot together (including 5 hours at the pottery place last Friday). I just like my breather. Everyone gets a break from each other. I don’t want “alone” time. Just a chance to focus for a little while. It’s nice to miss some one even if it is only for a few hours a day. I get my time at the gym and get my housework done so that when everyone is home we have quality time.

My son has been home all week sick … so the vacation started December 23rd, and he’s still home. I think any Mom being completely truthful with herself would both love the time with her children and wish for time for herself! I’m trying to look on the bright side … I’ve gotten a lot of work done because I’ve been glued to the house! And I certainly wouldn’t hurry a sick child back to school. On the other hand, when he goes back next week, I’ll be glad for a little break too!
