Homeless Teen Writes Heartfelt Blog

Monday, January 5, 2009

Life on the road isn't a choice for one teen and her mom. Katy Hughes and her mother Elizabeth have been living out of a car after being unexpectedly evicted from their apartment a few weeks ago. In an effort to shed light on the harsh reality of homelessness, Katy started chronicling her experiences online. An aspiring writer, the 16-year-old created a blog called "Destination Anywhere But Here."

Katy's honest and heartfelt words give readers a glimpse into her homeless and seemingly hopeless situation. She shares the frustration of being shunned by old neighbors, locked out of the garage where most of her childhood mementos are stored, and searching for a parking lot free of security guards. "The hardest part [about being homeless] is that people assume that it's your fault you are where you are, and that you don't deserve respect," says Katy.  "Circumstances beyond our control led us here." Despite Katy's misfortune, she still manages to have a sense of humor. "This isn't exactly the [most fun] thing ever, but I don't hate it either," writes Katy. "It just feels like a long boring car ride to me."

But this road trip doesn't have a clear destination. Katy and Elizabeth had little time to plan for the rough journey ahead of them. Not that life had been easy prior to their eviction. Katy's father passed away when she was six years old. So, Katy and her mom have been living off of survivor social security benefits. Katy isn't job hunting because she loses her portion of the benefits if she becomes employed. Another roadblock preventing her from earning a paycheck is severe migraines. Meanwhile, Katy's mom has been searching for work, but hasn't had any success. "She's been trying very hard. The problem is that you can't force someone to hire you," says Katy.

Elizabeth, who is disabled, lost her job at a drug store and could not afford to pay her rent without supplementary income. By the time Elizabeth gave her landlord the money she owed, it was too late. According to Katy, the landlord filed an unlawful detainer, a court proceeding that can legally evict someone from a place of residence. But he never informed Elizabeth of her court dates and as a result, the Hughes family lost everything.  However, their apartment, like their life, was also falling apart. "The place wasn't worth two cents because of the crooked walls and the no water in the kitchen and the moldy floors," writes Katy.

Katy's blog may have opened the door to a brighter future. "I was wondering if anything would ever go well for us again, but now I have hope that good things can happen," says Katy. Many people have now offered her and her mother a temporary place to sleep for a night. With courage and charisma, Katy and her mom keep driving and trying to move forward. "We're trying to get back on our feet," says Katy. "We would just like to live a normal life with a home and a job and happiness."

I hope Katy doesn’t lose faith. I’m sure she wants to care for her mom but she really needs an adult in her life to care for her.

I think it’s commendable that this girl is blogging her experiences. She should put some effort into writing a book and getting it published. I’m sure a book about a teenage girl being homeless would be a big seller if written for the teenage crowd. I’m confused why they say the landlord didn’t notify them of their courtdates. Usually it comes in the mail through the court system. There are several ways this family can get ahead. Both mom and daughter… One way is working under the table or in positions where you carry cash with you, serving tables, babysitting at people’s homes, busing tables. They need to sit down and see if working would bring in more money than that pension. If it does, then she should work instead of getting the pension. I see a lot of people making that mistake. Good luck. Those who work at what they want will always find it.

My family and I have been going through similar things. Both my parents are disabled. We are homeless and no one cares about us. We have only had scammers try to send us fake checks for donations. Never any real help.
