Is "American Idol" just a slick way to promote wannabe stars with previous experience?

The 2009 "American Idol" premiere pulled in 30 million viewers and included two hours of painful auditions. Well, mostly painful. But what happened to this being a contest for amateurs? It's recently been revealed that prior to appearing on "Idol," some contestants have inked multi-million dollar record deals. Is that fair?

Several "Idol" idolizers told ABCNEWS.com that they were turned off by the show's secretiveness about contestants' previous experience. On the show's website under "questions and facts," it says: "In order to be eligible, the contestants are not permitted to have any CURRENT recording or talent management agreements." That means it's not an amateur contest ... and here's proof from last night's show:

What do you think? Should "American Idol" be for amateurs only?

Everyone who won AI sucks except for Carrie Underwood. They’re all yesterday’s news. Most of them got dropped by their record label (hee hee). VH-1 should a do “Where are they now? Anerican Idols” show.

She had a beautiful voice and will probably go far in the competition but I really don’t think it’s fair. There was a guy on the other night who had previously had some kind of record deal. And to Anonymous above, don’t forget about Kelly Clarkson, she’s amazing too. We all know where Fantasia is now, almost homeless.
