Man Accused of Selling Daughter for Cash, Beer

Associated Press: Police have arrested a Greenfield man they say arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.
Police said they only learned of the deal after the 36-year-old man went to them to get his daughter back because payment wasn't made as promised. The man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of human trafficking.
Officers also arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of statutory rape. Investigators believe the girl went willingly with the man, but she's under California's legal age of consent and can't legally marry.
Police say arranged marriages involving underage girls have become a problem in this small Central Coast farming community.

As the parent of a teenager, I don’t know that it’s fair to pass judgment on this without knowing a) what kind of beer, b)exactly how many cases of meat, c)what kind of meat and what cuts the deal included, and finally d)what kind of little hellion the daughter may be.

This is a growing problem in many developing countries, never thought this would happen in America. This is disgusting and the father and potential buyer should be prosecuted for Human Trafficking which is illegal.

The central valley of California contains several large Hmong immigrant communities. They are generally poor, not well educated, and culturally marry early with arranged marriages.

The story says “the girl went willingly to the man.” I’m guessing the answer to the hellion question is “the slutty sort.” Why are children put on such pedestals these days? Used to be the little buggars had to earn their keep. Now mummy and daddy just hand them allowance without demanding even so much as a tidy room. It’s about time somebody woke up and demanded something back in exchange for all that room and board.
