Bummer! No Mail on Saturdays

Even the US Postal Service is affected by the sagging economy ... they may cancel mail service on Saturdays. Say it isn't so!

Momlogic's Jen: As a child, I was obsessed with the mail -- I just knew something spectacular would arrive in that mailbox for me. I mean, the Seamonkeys (ah -- childhood mail nostalgia) I ordered always arrived in a little box, the sweet cards from my grandma and my Scholastic magazine all magically arrived in the mailbox on Saturday! Twenty-some years later, I'm still obsessed with the mail. I like to be the first person to sift through it and open it -- well, except the bills, of course!
But now the USPS has announced they may cancel Saturday mail delivery due to the sagging economy. No more mail on Saturday? Are you kidding me? How in the world are we going to function as a nation with no Saturday mail? As working mothers, when else are we going to find time to go to the post office? I am freaking out at the mere thought!
Plus, all the good stuff is delivered on Saturday. No mail that day means one less day for surprises to land in our mailboxes and just one more thing to add to the "to do" list during the week! Who can feel happy about that?
But it's not a done deal yet. The USPS has announced it expects $2 billion to $3 billion of losses this year (thanks to less mail and more e-mail, along with higher gas prices), and this is one way the hope to offset those losses. But Congress is vehemently opposed to the plan.
What do you think about no Saturday mail?
I could get by on 4 or even 3 days of mail delivery. I get nothing but junk mail 2 days each week.
ACTUALLY the USPS said they specifically weren’t looking to cut Sat, but whatever day has the least delivery (they mentioned Tues).
I am all for getting mail only three days a week. That means one less day to worry about getting bills. BTW, if that saves jobs, then that is a plus.
No Saturday would be fine with me.
I work for the post office. I am a proud letter carrier. One less day would definitely cut jobs for CAREER employees. We have carriers who are called T-6s. The have 5 routes assigned to them called a swing. There are five of us regulars who are on one T-6s swing. They take each one of our routes on our scheduled day off that week. We have 25 routes in our office, which equals 5 T-6 positions that will be lost.
They complain of losing money, but they continue to dole out contracts to temporary employees who do not have to take a test for a carrier position, but get offered our career benefits. Most of these folks are underacheivers and the career employees have to take up their slack.
Right now they are inventing positions to keep people busy and paying them well to do it.
Management is something that needs to be looked into. In the old days, all it took was one supervisor and one postmaster to run an office of our size. Now, we have 3 supervisors and a psuedo-postmaster. They hang out all day after they yell at us to get on the street… they do errands, they do lunch… they spy on us to try and catch us doing something. Dang, most of us skip our breaks and lunches just to increase our performance so we arent called on the carpet.
Speaking of being called on the carpet… we dont need postmasters any more. They are just seat fillers… figure-heads… People who get yelled at by their bosses… They have absolutely no say in how ‘their’ office is being run. They take orders from district people who are micro managing us all.
Get rid of some of the supervisors and almost all the postmasters and we will be able to keep all our craft/union jobs.
One more thing befor I go…. people are always complaining about postage rates. We are self supporting thru the sale of postage. We pay all our own wages, retirement benefits, health care, fleets of vehicles, etc. If you will take the time to check, we also have one of the cheapest postage rates in the world…. and we will even deliver your mail via swamp boat, mule, dog sled, bush plane… just to get your mail to you. You deserve our great service…. we deliver for YOU! Make sure that we will still be able to do this.
If it’s only temporary i’ll support it.

What i deliver on Saturday’s is a joke. Have of the time the mail I delivered on saturday is still in the box Monday.Don’t we need a break from all the bills anyway. It should have been done years ago. In this troubled economy it’s about not seeing anyone else lose there job. I have been a carrier for 22 and first class mail is a thing of the past. 80% of the mail I take out is 3rd class mail [aka] junk mail. No delivery on Tuesday would be a mistake it would affect to many buisness’s.
most everyone wants no saturday mail delivery. it makes sence to do this. and some of the buisnesses won’t halft to worry that the mail is still there on mondays, as well as residentals that would not be there to get thire mail if they work when mail is delivered and it will give regular carriers days to work instead of hireing subs.to help. no saturday deliveries will mean more savings for usps. tusedays would be bad for no deliveries because it would not benefit anyone like a no saturdays delivery would benefit.
They should have followed the Canada Post Long Ago in some of the practices. I only receive 1 town flyer on Saturdays for about the last 2 years. Also they need to look into any overtime the carriers put in, I find the same mail carrier every day parked in a shaddy spot off the main roads taking a nap or reading god knows whose newspaper or magazine. If these same carriers are putting in OT that would be a major savings. Th canada post calculates routes and measures how many, how long and where things are slipping. However sales counters should remain open on Saturdays and close another day that may not be busy, so those that do work can still get to the post office.
I am obsessed with mail. ever since I was thirteen years old, I have always been the first one to run to the mail box. I always look for a check. sometimes I get surprises like that. I hope that they don’t cancel the mail on saturdays. I will be sad.
I have read just now a response to this issue by an official postal employee. Statements about eliminating supervisory and other such simular positions as an excellant answer to the “numbers crunch”. Truthfully I agree that it appears to be far to many people with high paying positions doing little to nothing, and wonder as well as that person why this is so, and better yet why this is so in every arena of business in this country? To cut back service with the excuse of “lack of finacial resources” is crazy talk. It’s only an easy quick fix which is recently backfiring on many corporations. The U.S. postal service is a company and perhapes should be THE company that takes a stand to revamp its current finacial issues without risking both employment concerns and thworting the very reason they exist “the public”.
Canada has mail Monday through Friday.
I live in a rural community, and lots of people like me will lose their jobs if this happens. I only get to work for people on their days off, vacations, and sick days. I cover 2 people, so I get 2 days a week generally. It’s not much, but it’s enough to supplement our income while we struggle to get through MORE college so that we can hopefully get better jobs. Losing this job would be devastating to us, as well as many people in same position as me. To the comment about business receiving mail on Saturdays when they are not open and hoping their mail is still there on Mondays, any business can request no Saturday delivery, and their mail will be held in the office and delivered on Monday. Plus, what about those people waiting for something important? We may deliver a lot of junk mail but I say hooray for that because we are still getting paid to deliver it. I think there are a lot of ways to trim the fat that the upper administration doesn’t want to look at, and there are a lot of ways they could be making more money, but they don’t follow through. THings I heard about in my training are not actually seen happening in the real work environment that could increase revenue. Plus, they should make the stamp an even .50 or even .75 cents and get it over with. The post office needs to make money, and like any business should. However, they still do not have that frame of mind in their administration. They were given the permission to make profit, but not given the tools and/or training in the higher ups. Either that or it hasn’t trickled down to the workers level at all, so either way its a major issue. If UPS can make money, then USPS shouldn’t have any issues… The difference is that the USPS is still being run like an institution not a business.
Fine information, many thanks to the author. It is puzzling to me now, but in general, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Very much thanks again and best of luck!

If delivering mail one less day per month helps USPS save money and allows people to keep their jobs then I’m all for it. But I have to wonder how that one less day of mail delivery will truly affect the people that work at the post office. Will this save the jobs of people who would otherwise be fired/laid-off? Will they lose some overtime but still get to work or will this mean that less days means that less employees are needed?
