Obama Dog Search Down to Two Breeds

Monday, January 12, 2009
filed under: pet logic

Ever since election day, the search for the next first family pet has been a hot topic debated by political experts and animal lovers.

Obama Dog search

President-elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle are ready to select one of two dog breeds for their daughters Malia and Sasha to bring to the White House. AP reports that the lucky breeds still in contention are the Labradoodle (a Labrador and Poodle mix) and the Portuguese water hound.

Obama told George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week," "We're closing in on it," adding, "This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary."

The Obamas would like to rescue a shelter dog, but they must accommodate Malia's allergies, so it's necessary to select a particular breed.

We have 2 standard poodles and they do not shed, but the labadooles will shed, my friend has two. We have back & apricot poodle. They are so smart and great with childrend and people. One came to us at 8 weeks old and was already house trained (that is smart).I know your girls would love the standard poodles. wandee

I think both are great choices - but most of all, I sincerely hope that the Obamas choose a shelter dog, not a dog from a breeder! I think that would be a wonderful statement from the new First Family.

labradoodle? really? did not know labradoodles were hypoallergenic, but thinking about it, with the poodle mix, they very well could be fine. I came across an OK site that provides some background info: http://obamadogadoption.com/

Great choices! The exact 2 we had narrowed our search to. We chose a Labradoodle over the Portuguese Water Dog because we felt the Portuguese Water Dog, at 50 lbs, to be too large for our home. We were able to get a medium sized (30lbs) Labradoodle. She doesn’t shed AT ALL. Labradoodle’s that are bred to the standards of the IALA (International Austrailian Labradoodle Association) will not shed. I’m sure the Obama’s will be happy with either dog, since home size isn’t an issue!

the dog is a Portuguese water dog not a hound. At least with a Portie you have a chance at predicting it’s intelligence and temperment. With the labradoodle you take your chances. j

My daughter has many allergies but still wanted a dog. We choose a Labradoodle, who we named Casey.Awesome dog, very smart, great with kids. We also got him from a shelter!

My daughter’s family, through much research on non-allergenic dogs, chose the Havanese: a small dog which they found through a breeder and trainer in PA. After purchasing one dog, they realized 2 would provide both company for each other. They now have a black and white, and a blond. Talli and Bea are a perfect addition to the family of 5, children ages 12, 10 and 8. If you would like more feedback from them, let me know!!! This is an “obvious choice” in my book, having spent many hours dog-sitting and we are totally in love with each other! (Grandmother)Noma Kylie

Only a shelter dog should be considered. The Presidents choice could save millions of dogs from shelters. Buying a dog sends the wrong message, and will only add to the problem of pet overpopulation. The only people to benefit will be the breeders who want to “cash in” on the next celeberty dog. Don’t breed or buy while homeless dogs die. Please Mr President do the right thing.

This breed makes wonderful pets, and their curly hairs are good for people allergic to dogs.
