Sorry, No Caviar at the Inaugural Ball

For moms fantasizing about the lavish filet mignon and lobster tails at all the parties in Washington D.C., we're sorry to break it to you, but -- you may be served hot wings instead.
On January 20, President-elect Barack Obama's favorite chili and pumpkin pie may take center stage as caterers are putting the final touches on the menu for the inaugural balls around Washington D.C. According to veteran caterers for the parties, food planning -- even if it is just beef tenderloin and poached shrimp -- is a logistical nightmare, demanding months of preparation, sleepless nights and Secret Service background checks for every waiter, bartender and chef. A Secret Service agent is even in the kitchen at all times!
We thought that the scaled down menu was a nod to our flailing economy, but it looks like mini cookies and coffee have been a common staple for inaugural balls in the past. A word to the wise moms who are going: Eat ahead of time.
