A New York City van struck at least five children on a sidewalk in Chinatown, killing two of them.

Authorities say that the children were among a group of 14 that were walking as the white vehicle came rapidly toward them.

Police are reporting that one child was seriously injured, but is now recovering. Two or three additional children sustained minor injuries.

The incident is still under investigation. It is believed that the driver was backing up when he hit the children.
