Does the art world have a baby Jackson Pollack on their hands or a load of B.S.?

Ever seen a modern art exhibit and thought "My 2-year-old could do better!"? Well, the joke was on a Melbourne gallery director who discovered one of the pieces he included in an exhibit was created by a 22-month-old little girl.

Turns out, toddler Aelita Andre's mom Nikka Kalashnikova believed her daughter to be such   an artistic genius she submitted her child's "works" to a prestigious gallery. OK, we've all thought our kids were amazingly talented at one time or another, but this is ridiculous.

Mark Jamieson, the owner of the gallery, admits to being a little embarrassed at first when he discovered the works were by someone who wasn't potty trained, but he couldn't argue with the fact that the pictures were selling.

Seven of the 15 works, priced between $300 and $3,000, were sold before the show opened. Amazing, since all the kid did was squeeze tubes on to a canvas and smear it around with her hands!

Has the art world lost their minds or is this kid a prodigy?

This particular little girl got a lot of face time in my Visual Culture class. If anyone wants to jump in the debate, watch “My Kid Can Paint That”. Its a documentary about it. I am a certified modern art HATER, so my main view is not that she ISN’T an artist (she isn’t) but that the rest of the Abstractists are con men. ;)

If poeple get enjoyment from looking at her canvases, who are we to complain? I saw that documentary about Marla Olmstead and I felt sorry for her and her mom. Everyone was looking for her to fail after the news story. Many kids act differently when a video camera is on them. Some kids do have talent beyond their years and we should celebrate it instead of trying to knock it down.

J- i agree! For christs sake, theyre children! If people wanna buy their art, let em. Quit being sour that yours arent selling as well or *you* want to be taken seriously. It’s all good fun!

Well it just goes to show that some people buy things and have no clue what they are buying. It’s at an art gallery, it must be art! Where’s my checkbook!

Idiots.
