Cancer Scare a Good Thing?

Guest blogger mom-on-the-edge: A couple of months ago I caught an awful bug from my 18-month-old. I did what most mom's don't do and most men fear... I went to the doctor. A physician's assistant thought she felt a lump on the right side of my neck. She called in the doc for back up but he poo pooed her suspicions. When he left she said, "I think you should get a full physical." Something about the way she said it made me actually make an appointment. So, after twenty years of avoidance there I was in that hideous gown feeling like a voodoo doll run by someone with a vengeance.
There was that lump again. I was sent for a sonogram. Cystic colloid. A liquid filled growth in my thyroid. Verrrry common. Next step -- an FNA test. Translation: Have a needle stuck in my neck which draws out the liquid and find out if it's cancerous. The odds of it being malignant are super slim. I'm having the test next week. I'm not afraid. In fact, I think having a cancer SCARE is a good thing. It wakes you up to the possibilities and makes you appreciate your health that much more.
My husband doesn't seem concerned either. We were back fighting again this past weekend. If only the doctor could cure that pain in my neck ...
The simple cysts are almost always benign. If it refills after aspiration the, PEI injection can be used to shrink the cyst [outpatient procedure] and prevent it is reoccurrence.
This procedure is done here in CA, in Santa Monica thyroid clinic.

My mom had one of those. No biggie. I have had a little lump on my neck since I was a young teenager. It is actually smaller now. The doc a long time ago told me not to worry about it. Maybe if I ever get insurance I’ll have it checked out again. Good Luck!
