RCMP spokesman Sgt. Claude Tremblay said the accident happened around 7 p.m. Sunday as the southbound car hit the northbound Acadian Lines bus near St. John, the Canwest News Service reported Monday.

"The car slid sideways in front of the bus. It was very slippery conditions, icy roads," Tremblay told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

No one on the bus was injured.

Tremblay said the man was 31 years old and was traveling with his 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.

"They were from a large family so we will withhold their names for now," Tremblay said.

He told the CBC two of the victims died instantly, while the third died after being taken to a local hospital.
