Mars, we assume, is for the planet. The Hebrew word Merkabah means "chariot." Merkaba is also a Zulu word for a space/time/dimension vehicle. I guess that means you could technically take a Merkaba and fly to Mars. Far out!
Babynames.com founder Jennifer Moss says, "I had a feeling it would be an interesting name, considering her other children are named SEVEN and PUMA. Mars does fit in the family. Erykah is a creative namer ... even with herself! She was born Erica Abie Wright but later changed her name to Erykah Badu."

It’s more likely that “Mars” refers to the god for whom the planet is named. Mars is the Greek god of war, and Mars Ultor, who drives a chariot is the god of vengeful war.
