Free Breakfast Today at Denny's

Denny's appeared to be hitting a grand slam as it offered free breakfasts to customers around the country this morning.
The chain is serving a free Grand Slam -- two eggs, two slices of bacon, two sausage links and two pancakes -- from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The line was out the door as about 30 people waited for tables at a Denny's in Dallas. Manager Ron Khalid said the wait was about 30 minutes and that the crowds made it feel more like a weekend.
Francisco Flores, 53, said he and his partner usually go to breakfast at a diner, but rushed over this morning after his partner learned about the free breakfast on the morning news.
"I didn't even shower," Flores said.
A fashion designer who was laid off last year, Flores said the free breakfast was a nice change of pace since he was hurting financially from the downturn in the economy.
Nelson Marchioli, president and CEO of Denny's, says he expects at least 2 million more customers today. "In this economy, people will respond to free," he said.
Marchioli said the giveaway is a good opportunity for the restaurant to survive and outlast the competition. He hopes the exposure will help the company take back shares they lost over the past 50 years.
Cathy Roberts, who has worked as a waitress at Denny's for two years, thinks the giveaway will bring the "regulars" back to Denny's.
"Ever since gas was $4 a gallon we haven't had regular customers," Roberts said. "It's bad. People are hurting from the economy."
Denny's CEO Marchioli described 2009 as "the year of the Grand Slam," with the breakfast giveaway signifying the first of many breakfast events. Soon the Grand Slam will come with healthier options for a more active lifestyle.
Eva Odemwingie, 25, and her friend Robin Christian said they enjoyed their free breakfasts this morning at Denny's so much that they took leftovers home for lunch.
Christian said her friends had texted her last night about the free meal. Both women said they were going to call the manager later to thank them for their experience.
"I hadn't thought about Denny's in a while, so this put it back on the map for me," Odemwingie said.
