This story just breaks our hearts.

Kayley Ishii

Sheriff's investigators today are looking into the death of a 4-year-old California girl who was fatally injured at home when she climbed into a front-loading washing machine that her 15-month-old brother turned on.

Kayley Ishii, who was in the washer for at least two minutes as it filled with water, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center about 3 PM yesterday and died at 8:30 PM, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

"We're just investigating the whole incident," Amormino said. "It may turn out to be a tragic accident."

The girl's mother was home at the time, Amormino said.

This is so sad. It's also a wake-up call to those of us who have front-loading washers. We are going to look into getting a Front Loader Washer-Dryer Lock immediately.

"Though most injuries associated with washing machines are minor, some are severe and devastating," writes Barbara Warner of Toledo Children's Hospital. "Many of the injuries could be avoided with improvements in machine design while others suggest a need for increased education of potential dangers and better supervision of children if they are allowed access to areas where washing machines are operating."

The family photos on MySpace will break your heart. Our thoughts go out to this beautiful family in this tragic time.

This is a tragedy that will take the Ishii’s a lifetime to get over. They are some of the nicest people on earth. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Here's comes the Gravy Train... February 3, 2009, 8:20 PM

Tradegy of course. But I’m sure the Ishii’s will be suing the manfacturer of the washing machine or the apartment complex management because they weren’t supervising their own children in their own home. Why are people so stupid that it takes a tragedy like this before they think to “child-proof” thier own homes? When they first got that machine, didn’t they think for 2 seconds that the children might be able to get inside and reach the buttons?!? Come on people. Just walk around your house and actually pay attention to your stuff, I guarantee you’ll find safety issues. And what’s with this so called “mother”? What kind of mother doesn’t constantly supervise a 15 month old?!? She’s probably a stay at home mom too, most claim that it is a full time job that should pay six figures a year because it’s soooooo hard. She should be fired, although her workload has just been cut in half…

Gravy Train, why don’t you just kick a family while it’s down?! I have two small children and no they are not supervised every minute of every day. That is just not possible. Did you ever think the mother had to use the bathroom or had another quick task that took her out of the sight of her children? I pray that you never have the heartbreak I’m sure this family is having to endure.

Gravy Train- You obviously do not have children and if you do, you are probably one of those men who has NO CLUE what it is like to stay at home with young children! Somehow you men have clean underwear to grab to put on your rearends every morning and food in the frig and/or on the table. I pray for this family. I hope the mother does not blame herself or her youngest child- this was just a tragic accident.

My front-loader doesn’t fill up with water, just a few inches at the bottom…I wonder if mine is an exception? I cannot imagine how a 15-month-old could access the knobs/buttons. I am actually hoping this is a tragic accident and not a cover story by the parent.

Obviously people with children should freaking watch after them, OR should we propose that a license be obtained before these inept adults are allowed to have children….yes, it is a terrible tragedy, but if you have children you have to learn what ‘responsibility’ is..I see more people with kids who should never have kids..it is so sad.

What a beautiful family and a beautiful little girl. My heart aches for them.

My prayers and heart will go out for Ishii family.

Can you imagine the horror this child suffered. It’s heartbreaking. This was an accident, no matter what the circumstances. A child died in a horrifyingly painful way. Please keep your rude judgments to yourself. Have some respect for this child and her family.

who was watching these kids, Zenaida Gonzales?

how could you be son insensitive?! the family is suffering enough and none of them need to be blamed for what happened. i pray that something like this never happens to you judgmental people. and as for the ishii’s i love them and am praying immensely for them.

This family needs compassion right now, not criticism. For those of you would pass judgement, SHAME ON YOU! You can’t stand on the outside and assume anything about this family if you don’t know them. My heart goes out to this beautiful family. What tragic loss.

A mother February 4, 2009, 10:43 AM

I am truly sorry for the loss of this little girl’s life. But C’mon, people. How many of you have washers and 15-month-old children? I have had both. My son is now 22. When he was 15 months old, he could not have gotten to the on/off switch of the washer without some serious effort. I am sorry, but there is no way that little boy could have gotten to that switch unless he was smart enought to get a chair or some other device to climb up to the top of the washer. I can honestly say that I have never seen a washer that had all its control knobs low enough for a 15 month old child to access easily. I hope that this tragedy will serve as a lesson for all mothers. If you have appliances and small children, teach the child to stay away from the appliance. (At 4 she was old enough to teach) If you cannot teach the child, then keep the appliances in an room that can be closed off and locked.

For those of you passing judgement, no one here needs the commentary. Especially not the family. It was a tragic loss and I’m sure they are going through a terrible ordeal right now. Please keep your judgements to yourself. For the people saying “I’m sorry, you have to be a better parent…” I’m sure your children have had accidents- it’s something out of your control, no matter how much you prepare. Remember that before you blame the parents- an accident can happen to anyone…this just so happened to be fatal. I pray for all of you.

I fix washers for a living and all front load washers have a control lock on them, just for situations like this. The problem is no one ever reads their manual to find this information out, however this is still a very sad story.

George February 5, 2009, 12:36 AM

This is a weird story. Why did the girl climb into the washing machine in the first place? Washing machines can not start with the door open, so who closed the door? Did the 15-month old kid both close the door and start it?

It sounds very peculiar to me. Then it’s more likely that the mother did it, and then blamed it on her baby brother, as he is way below legal age for criminal punishment.

Sharon Rouse February 5, 2009, 7:47 PM

Sadly these things do happen 8 years ago on the 9th of this month, yes on Monday I lost my 17 month old grandson in a top loading washing machine 10 days before that a 2 year old girl from Germany died the same way. It does happen. The word accident was invented for these situations and yes the Mother will blame herself for the rest of her life. Our love to all those involved.I live in Tasmania Australia so this is a problem worldwide.

I disagree with Renee, I hope the person who made the second comment does have to endure this type of tragidy in there life. To the person who posted the second comment…Who the F### do you think you are to pass judgement like that. I only hope that someday a similar situation happens to you so we can all tell you what a peice of sh!t you are. It’s cowards like you who post on these blogs but don’t have the balls to leave a name that drive me crazy…Chickensh!t. You obviously don’t have any kids and if you do, someone made a horrible mistake in deciding to reproduce with you. Keep you omnipotent comments to yourself.

Thank you Ryan.

Robert February 6, 2009, 1:00 PM

to Mr. Gravy Train….whatever judement you may have just give way to the authorities to find whatever happened to the poor little girl, just offer prayers to the family coz they were enduring this too much pain and they don’t deserve to be criticized like this…for me it was an accident…and I hope you have conscience …I feel so deeply sad of this story and it really bothers me coz if this happens to me I don’t even know if I will still survived the situation lets just all pray for the safety of this family and thanks Thee to God ..
