My Mother, Her Movies

Guest blogger Dani Klein Modisett: Some of my friends play mahjong with their mothers, others trade recipes or shop together to stay close.

two woman talking in phone

Since I don't like any of that, thank god my mother and I have movies to talk about.

"I saw that 'Revolutionary Road,' very disturbing picture.  Why do they make a movie like that?" she asked me on the phone last Sunday.

"Well...I..."

"I mean she's very talented and he looks much better now that he's filled out, but really, very disturbing.  Did you see it?"

"Yes, yes I did.  I liked it.  I thought it was beautifully shot.  The director had a very specific vision."

"The director had a "vision"? The director is her husband. Why would he want to watch his wife go through all that? That's very weird to me."

"Well, they're artists..."

"I don't know anything about that, I just know I was very upset when I left the theater....

"That's good.  It affected you, that's what film makers want."

"....imagine how she felt acting it.  But she'll probably get a nomination for it or for the other one, 'The Reader,' which was also weird."

"I didn't see that...it's the one where she bathes the young boy, right?"

"She does more than bathe him."

"Right.  Also supposed to be very moving."

"Yeah, it was good, but you know at my age, I like to feel good when I leave the theater.

What about that "Milk"? Have you seen that? Sean Penn does an amazing job."

"He's always good. I can't think of a movie where he hasn't just totally nailed his performance."

"Yeah. Too bad he's nuts."

"Mom!  Do you know him?"

"Of course I don't know him."

"Then how do you know he's crazy?"

"I read things. I hear things."

"Where?"

"I watch Entertainment Tonight and that other show.  Did you hear about J Lo? What a fiasco.  And Sarah Jessica finally had enough of what's his name.  Did you watch The Globes? Shirley MacLean has gottenso old..."

"Shirley MacLean is old, Mom. I gotta go, the baby's crying..."

"Susan Sarandon, now she looks terrific..."

"Okay honey, I'll be right there!" I yell to the kids' room.  "Mom? Mom, I gotta go..."

"You know who's beautiful? That Simon Baker, I love him..."

 "Talk to you soon...love you."

That’s funny. I call my mom usually every morning, sometimes everyother. She lives about 3 hours away. We ALWAYS talk about what we cooked or are going to cook. Sometimes movies. Usually food and the kids though, and my little brothers. Oh, and of course, her snobby sisters in law (married to my dads 2 brothers).
