North Dakota House Gives Fertilized Eggs Human Status

The North Dakota House approved a measure that gives fertilized human eggs the same rights as a human being. The steps would essentially ban abortion in the state.
The bill states that "any organism with the genome of homo sapiens" is a person protected by state laws.
"This language is not as aggressive as the direct ban legislation that I've proposed in the past," said Rep. Dan Ruby, the measure's sponsor. "This is very simply defining when life begins, and giving that life some protections under our Constitution -- the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
The bill challenges Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that extended abortion rights across the nation.

So awesome. It’s about time legislators stand up and define the moment we have human rights. I’m glad to hear ND has taken a stand. I hope other states follow their lead.

This is not at all awesome. Do you like birth control? Do you like having control over your health care decisions while pregnant? Don’t live in South Dakota because you can’t count on either of those anymore. I hate abortion and I agree it’s wrong but this type of law takes a lot of control of women’s lives away from them. Trust women to do what’s right and support them if unwanted pregnancies occur—don’t define fertilized eggs as humans.
