Nadya Suleman, the mother who delivered octuplets last week, has received nearly $170,000 in state disability payments.

Nadya Suleman

According to state workers' compensation records reviewed by the Los Angeles Times, in 1996, Suleman earned her psychiatric technician license from and began working at Metropolitan State Hospital, a mental hospital in Southern California. It was there that she sustained the injury that led to the workers' compensation claim.

The documents reveal that in 1999 nearly two dozen patients rioted in the women's ward at the hospital. As she was helping other staffers restrain a patient, a desk thrown at her by another patient hit her in the back. The injury caused disc protrusions in her lumbar spine, and left her complaining of headaches and intense pain throughout her lower body for years. She went on state disability and was paid nearly $170,000 in disability benefits between 2000 and 2008 for injuries to her back, neck and shoulder.

The single mother gave birth to most of her six other children during the time she was on disability, exacerbating the injury. One doctor, after examining her for the state, attributed 90% of her injury to the work incident and 10% to her pregnancy.

State documents indicate that Suleman testified during a hearing on her case in December 2001 that her pregnancy had aggravated her back condition. She said she spent most of the day in bed and was unable to care for her first child.

In addition to the injury reports, state documents reveal that Suleman had three failed pregnancies prior to becoming a mother. She reportedly said "I just wanted to die. I suspected I was pregnant but I thought 'that's ridiculous.' " But the birth of the baby "helped my spirits."  In addition, she said she was depressed with "recent thoughts of death." She told a doctor evaluating for the state her that the depression was related to "the powerful and uncontrollable emotions associated with her pregnancy: both the fear that it would end and her elation that it might be brought to fruition and she would realize her dream of having a child."

As for Suleman's failed marriage, according to the records she attributed much of her break-up with her ex-husband to the pain and suffering sustained in the riot. She told a psychiatrist the bouts of depression she was suffering as a result of her injury were unfair to her husband. "I don't want to keep bringing him down. I want him to move on with his life," she told a psychiatrist. The couple then split in 2000, and were officially divorced last year.

In related news, the Medical Board of California has confirmed they are investigating whether there were any violations by the fertility doctor who treated Suleman. Board spokeswoman Candis Cohen says the board will determine whether there was a violation of medical standards.

see that’s what happens when people assume. I recall reading a blog about somebody who was so mad at this woman because now she had to support her since she assumed this woman ( or Octopussy like TMZ calls her) is probably living off public assistance. Never assume anything people never, ever assume.

Okay lets think this thru. She is on disablility for back problems for which she received compensation. The she is pregnant which is known to stress the back X 8. That is living off of public assistance. How does she feed 14, perhaps WIC and food stamps?

Amen, Marion! I see “mental hospital” and “$170 k in state disability payments”. If you can carry 14 children - 8 at one time - your back is FINE! Not to mention that in vitro is not cheap! The hospital stay plus NICU for 8 babies is going to be in the several-million-dollar range and her piddly $170k won’t even begin to cover it. I smell public assistance coming (or a reality show) in her near future.

It looks to me like she’s been using some of her funds, disability or not, to get lip injections. Her lips just don’t look natural to me.

LOL, Karen!

I have real back issues, and can’t get disability. So I don’t get it at all.

If she was soooo “lonely” she should have gotten a PET !!! Not 8 MORE mouths to feed that will someday need a college education.

Karen, I work with a 35 yr old woman who gets regular collagen injections in her lips and she looks just like this woman. Who is this looney trying to fool with her manicured nails and fish lips? How many of you mothers with only a reasonable amount of kids have time to get manicures and keep them in good shape? This girl is off her rocker, she should have been a patient at that mental hospital, not an employee…

Why don’t we all just leave this women alone?? Who are we to judge her or her motives? She is not the only women in this country to have 14 kids. I understand the moral issues, but really, what good is it doing to bash her and judge her like this? Let her live her own life.

Nikki
When she entered the public arena she became foder for discussion. Don’t tell me that she was not ready for this, sounds like she wanted the attention.

I think everyone should leave this woman and her family alone. Everyone always picks on the little person. How about picking on those bleeping wall street executives and highly compensated CEO’s who paid themselves $20 billion or more in bonus recently! They run companies into the ground and have the nerve to think they deserve a bonus. This woman and her family will NEVER cost what the banks, housing lenders, AIG executives, Madoff, and other greedy people do. If any of you have never needed help, good for you. The way the economy is going, I hope none of you need a job, etc. My goodness….you might need some attention like public assistance.

We are able to concentrate on more than one story at a time. Yes the economy is horrible and it going to get worse. Even more reason not to bring 14 children into a unemployed moms home living with bankrupt parents

Mindy February 6, 2009, 10:47 PM

Nayda Suleman should be investigated for fraud as she told workman’s comp she couldn’t work, then she got pregnant which put more stress on her back then by what working would have done.

The tax payers of almost bankrupt California will be footing the bill for this.

I bet she got the idea to have a litter from watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 and saw all the freebies they get and that they also can write off as tax expenses.. their home. their clothes, Car etc etc.

Thats why people are having litters of children. The Learning Channel has offered a show to this woman.

I for one will be blocking the Learning Channel from my home.

Enough IS enough as I don’t want to be contributing to Jon & Kate pockets for exploiting their kids or this woman.

I’d also hope her fertility Doctor whose now being investigated has to foot the bill for child care.

Wow, the majority of these comments are just ridiculous. How does one not deserve to get pregnant, by any means which they choose, because they had a back injury! Seriously relook at what you wrote. You do not know this woman. Let the first to judge be the one with out sin, seriously doubt that is any of you!!! The children are blessings to this world regardless of what means they came into the world….
You all just need to examine your own life and improve in those areas that need it, instead of trying to elevate yourself by degrading and poking fun at someone that isn’t you. Grow up to be women and stop whinning like a 5 year old that just got her popsicle stole by her older brother!

I worked for the State Of California-Disability Insurance branch. We saw people like this across our desk get away with murder. The Administrative Law Judges are to fault. It was impossible to pursue fraud at any level without the management punishing employees for trying to do their jobs. Wake up everyone, we will pay for this woman and all the other subculture cottage industries that thrive in the Golden State. How is it that people earning $10.00 an hour in California live in a six figure world-ask yourselves???????

david February 7, 2009, 10:50 AM

If she is living off disability, then she is living off us. She herself has said her back hurt so bad she couldnt take care of her first baby, well how is she going to handle 14?? This lady is putting a foot in her mouth each time new stuff comes out.

Anonymous February 7, 2009, 10:52 AM

And in case some our saying, no that money came from her employer and what she put into it i say…WRONG, that is workers compensation, she lived of DISABILITY, which means that is taxpayers money right there.

Crys February 7, 2009, 11:31 AM

Parents: imagine what your life would be like without your children. That alone should be enough to make you understand her choices. Would you have rathered her have the eggs destroyed? Again, how willing would you be to give away YOUR fertilized eggs? Perhaps I’m selfish, but I would want to know those children, not have them given to someone else and never be able to make sure they were being treated well.
Would you be happier if the state said, “ok, well, people don’t like that we’re giving you money, so we’re stopping and you and your family can go live in the streets’. It’s not just your child who’s important, difficult to grasp as that is, and if you believe life begins at conception, you should be supporting this woman for doing the right thing.

Crys February 7, 2009, 11:33 AM

As for her lips, I haven’t hear anyone screaming Angelina Jolie’s lips are fakes. Quite the opposite seems to have been in the news for years.
