Associated Press: The owner of an Arkansas daycare center where 10 children were sickened after they were given windshield wiper fluid has surrendered her state license to child welfare investigators, officials said Friday.

A spokeswoman for Arkansas' Department of Human Services described the owner, Carolyn Bynum, as "upset" and worried about the children. She told investigators the incident was "just a horrible mistake."

Child welfare investigators plan to talk to the owner of an Arkansas daycare center where 10 children were sickened after they were given windshield wiper fluid to drink.

Hospital officials say a day-care staffer mistakenly put the blue liquid in the refrigerator after shopping and later served it thinking it was Kool-Aid. Doctors estimate the children, ages 2 to 7, drank about an ounce of the fluid.

Only one child remained hospitalized Friday morning after blood samples showed "measurable levels" of methanol, a highly toxic alcohol that can induce comas and cause blindness, officials said.

"All we know was that the individual at the day care had recently shopped and had come back to the day care with a lot of different products," said Laura James, a pediatric pharmacologist and toxicologist at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. "This product was mistakenly grabbed and thought to be Kool-Aid and put in the refrigerator."

OMG! You’re SO right! Um, I could see making the mistake of throwing it in the fridge (I’ve done it with other things).

BUT how could you NOT notice that you have a child-proof lid AND that you had to peel off a seal?

And, how could you not notice the ammonia smell???

So dumb!!!

(Oh, and kool-aid doesn’t come in containers like that, they come in packages….)

This woman drank alcohol near the time of serving the blue Kool-aid, and she needs glasses all the time. Shame on her for hurting the precious children that feed her life. Seek Help woman.

My God! Windshield washer fluid comes in a completely different-looking bottle than kool-aid! And like one commentor stated, washer fluid comes with a child-proof cap whereas Kool-aid does not. AND if THAT wasn’t clue enough, could she not READ?! The washer fluid bottles are always clearly marked as such!
Was this really oversight, or was it intentional? I thought Arkansas had some strict licensing laws on daycare establishments in order to protect the kids. What is the educational level and mental status of the worker who did this? Overtired? On meds? Ill?
Whatever her issue was, she was certainly inattentive and negligent.

I pray the kids recover quickly and with no lasting ill effects. I also hope the worker involved is punished and is never allowed to work with children again!
