An Open Letter to Mamas Everywhere

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Christina Montoya Fiedler: Hi Mamas,

It's me, Joseph. My Mama has the day off, so I am writing her blog today. I have a bunch of new tricks up my sleeve, so she needs the break.

For one thing, my naps are shorter and I don't like to take them at the same time anymore. I'm a big boy now. The heck with schedules. In fact, I'm seven months old, and I think long naps are for babies. My Mama thinks I might have baby insomnia. She's silly.

I have teeth now too. My Mama says they are for eating and chewing on food, not on all the other stuff I put in my mouth, but I can't help it! I'm just curious. I mean, haven't you ever wondered what a pair of keys or your cell phone tastes like? Gross. I do not recommend it. I cannot wait to have a hamburger. No wait, a cheeseburger. I've heard good things about them.

I can't crawl or walk yet, but I roll from place to place. Not a bad way to get into trouble. I almost rolled off the bed yesterday, but Mama caught me. She's fast.

My Mama said something last week about "calling in reinforcements," and all of a sudden my abuelita showed up. I like her. She smells good and makes a mean bottle. Thanks to her, my Spanish is improving. I'll test it out once I get a hang of this whole talking thing.

Abuelita can't believe how big I am getting or how much energy I have nowadays. I usually tucker her out pretty fast.

I never stay still. I wiggle right out of everything (highchairs, swaddles, my swing, you name it) and I think it is funny. That's how I got my nickname. Baby Houdini. Wiggling out of my dirty diapers during changing time usually causes the most commotion. But if you can't cause trouble, what fun is life? Yep. That's my motto. My Mama and Papa keep on saying that I'm giving them a run for their money. I'm not sure what that means, but I think it's good. So, I'll keep it up.

I see them sometimes looking at me when they think I am asleep. They say how sweet I look, and how much they love me. I love them too. I try hard to stay awake so that I can play more and stay up with them, but my eyes get heavy and blankies are so soft, that I can't resist.

But once I am asleep, I dream about eating bananas and oatmeal - my favorite meal, about my Papa carrying me on his shoulders and making me laugh so hard that I run out of breath to laugh with, about riding in the stroller and looking at the trees. I also dream about running! I can't do it yet, but I want to real bad.

This writing thing is pretty fun, but I have to go now, as I have a big schedule of eating, sleeping and well...pooping ahead of me. But it sure has been nice talking to all you mamas out there.

And, if you want to send me that cheeseburger, my mailing address is...

Mama, what? Quit looking at me like that!

I laughed so hard, I started tearing up! Did I mention that I’m reading this at a sshi bar? My vacations consist of napping and eating. I’ll take Joe to Coco’s or Fat Burger.
