A New York woman claims her daughter was switched at birth with another baby, and as a result, her baby was breast-fed by a different woman, WABC reported.

Shatiesha Brown gave birth to Anaya Victoria on January 31 at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. Within four hours of Anaya's birth, another woman whose first name begins with the letter "S" and whose last name is Brown gave birth to a baby girl, Brown told the TV station.

Brown had high blood pressure and doctors told her she could not be with Anaya for 24 hours, so they could make sure she did not have seizures, Brown said.

However, during those 24 hours, Anaya was bonding with the other woman, who was breast-feeding Anaya and taking family photos with her, said Michael Lamonsoff, Brown's lawyer.

When the mistake was finally realized and Anaya was returned to Brown, she rejected her natural mother's milk, and now has to be fed formula, Brown said.

Lamonsoff said his client plans to sue the hospital. A representative from Brookdale was not available for comment.

People involved need to get a healthier perspective. The babies are fine and with the right parents. There seems to be no ill intent. Experts say the nursing problems are not caused by the random breast. In my case the mix-up took fifty years to correct after I was switched in a California county hospital. Al, I think you’re a man.

I say this because I think only a woman knows the bond that occurs when her baby nurses at her breast for the first time.

If someone robbed me of this, I’d sue too. Maybe even worse than that.

I agree with TT. Breastfeeding can be a really big deal for a mother. I can completely see how upsetting it must have been for the mother when her own baby rejected her breast. she wanted to be able to give her the very best and she couldnt because the hopitals negligence.

I would be FAR more concerned about not spending the first 24 hours with her baby than the fact another woman got to nurse her baby first. Why couldn’t someone assist her? In the first 24-72 hours post partum babies are taking in colostrum, not milk. The hospital should sued for potentialy exposing the infant to another mothers transmitable diseases. There is no way mother and baby could not have overcome the hurdle of the initial “rejection” if only there was enough determination; but utter failure does make for a more compelling lawsuit.
