Blogs in, Badges out as Girl Scouts Modernize

Washington Post: Long associated with images of dorky vests and singalongs around the campfire, the 97-year-old Girl Scouts of the USA is trying to become cool. Or at least cooler.

With enrollment dropping sharply, the organization is experimenting with a total makeover of the Girl Scout experience.

What's in: books and blogs written in girls' voices on topics such as environmental awareness and engineering; troops led by college students; videoconferencing with scouts in other countries.

What's out: textbook-style lessons on the value of helping others; shunning the Internet; moms as troop leaders for teenagers.

Thin Mints are not in jeopardy, but -- OMG! -- badges will be de-emphasized.

"We took a step back and asked, 'What do girls need from us right now?' " said Eileen Doyle, the Girl Scouts' senior vice president of program development. "There is consistency in our goals throughout our history, but we can maintain that while being fun, edgy and challenging for modern-day girls."

Girl Scouts is a very important and very American organization. I can’t wait until we get our educational non-profit involved with them.

There are many community heroes made from this orgranization.

If the Girl Scouts need us then we should be doing everything we can to preserve such a great organization.

The girls need life skills aimed at them for their generation. 1st Class Kids can be a part of their education.

I urge you to visit www.1stClassKids.org for an inspiring chef who cares about these fantastic kids and a wonderful organization.

Also there is blog.1stClassKids.org with an article on Kids Safety that is perfect for the adults to follow. Its called the Kids Safety Zone.

1st Class Kids is looking forward to being a part of this fine organization to help these girls be all that they can be in life today.

This is such a fascinating debate. (Take a look at the gushing and incensed comments on the Post website). I don’t have strong feelings one way or the other, because I feel like I was one of the few (white, middle-class) girls from the 80s who was never in Girl Scouts….or Brownies.

Dr. John Tantillo (‘The Marketing Doctor’) is a branding expert who is a often a guest on Fox Business News, etc. He has a marketing blog on which he’s always talking about remembering one’s Target Market and the importance of recognizing what your core brand essentials are.

Keeping up with the changing times seems absolutely essential for the Girl Scouts if they want to remain relevant. Badges..outdated? The military still uses them….I feel like setting and meeting goals—a feeling of accomplishment—IS actually a core value of the Girl Scouts. Maybe the uniforms aren’t a ‘core’ aspect of the Girl Scout brand, but I think that recognition for achievement in some form most likely is.

I will not concur on it. I regard as precise post. Particularly the appellation attracted me to be familiar with the whole story.

Good points…I would note that as someone who really doesn’t write on blogs much (in fact, this may be my first post), I don’t think the term “lurker” is very becoming to a non-posting reader. It’s not your fault really , but perhaps the blogosphere could come up with a better, non-creepy name for the 90% of us that enjoy reading the posts.
