Chris Brown an Awful Kid's Choice?

Despite allegedly engaging in some very un-family-friendly behavior, Chris Brown is still a contender for Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards.

Chris Brown

When it comes to being a teen role model, lately Chris Brown falls short. The 19-year-old Radio Disney sensation was recently charged with beating up his girlfriend Rihanna -- although, according to reports the couple has reconciled.

It's the kind of tawdry story parents often use as a cautionary tale, and is hardly behavior that should be rewarded. Yet the children's network Nickelodeon still plans to feature Brown in their upcoming Kid's Choice Awards.

Parents, particularly moms in the blogsphere are voicing their disapproval. Twitter and message boards have been inundated with calls for Nickelodeon to remove Brown from the award ballots. Both Rihanna and Brown are up for multiple awards.

Nickelodeon executives, however, stand by their decision."Like all our KCA nominees, Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his work as a performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category," Nickelodeon said in a statement.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Cara Gardenswartz questioned Nickelodeon's decision to keep Brown on the ballot. "Nickelodeon is an adult-run network that is saying we are letting the kids decide. They are saying we don't need adults to step in and say that this is inappropriate," Gardenswartz said. "It's setting a horrible precedent and it's damaging. Kids can't differentiate between [Brown's] actions and his songs."

Despite Nickelodeon's determination to go ahead as if nothing has happened, an online petition has been circulating to remove both stars ballots. "We are appalled that Chris Brown and Rihanna are still listed as a nominees on the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards show."

The petition explains why Rihanna, the victim of the alleged abuse, should also be removed because she "refused a no-contact order and plans to continue the relationship in spite of [an alleged] violent attack by Brown."

What's making the toxic union of Brown and Rihanna even more troubling is the recent report that the couple are recording a song together. According to the Insider, "The seemingly reconciled duo have been working on a duet that Brown is hoping to include on his new album."

Do you think Chris Brown and Rihanna should be removed from the Nickelodeon ballots? Sound off in the momlogic community!!

As a parent of a boy and a girl who really like the couple I am very dissapointed they are not being removed from the awards. Chris Brown basically just made it clear it is okay to beat on women and get away with it. Rihanna basically said to all her little girl fans it’s okay to be with an abuser. They are the Witney Huston, and Bobby Brown of my days. Ironically the last name “Brown” remains the same.

Amy get over it!!!! You are so stupid!!! She went back to him after he beat her up,she’s asking for it.I’m sure she did nothing to him!!!!

I think it’s disgusting that Nickelodeon continues to support Chris Brown by keeping him as one of the nominees for a ‘Kid’s Choice Award.’ I wrote the network a nasty letter, and told them I won’t let my kids support anything Nickelodeon related.
As a children’s network, they are supposed to provide safe entertainment for young people, not encourage criminal or controversial behavior (yes I’m talking about Jamie Lynne Spears being pregnant at 16, and them acting like it’s no big deal). They need to step up and be advocates for children if they want to remain successful. I’m so tired of these ‘stars’ doing illegal things and not only getting away with it, but getting praised for it! It’s obvious that money is more important than anything else to these maggots, and they will do anything to get it. They are all volatile.

TMZ is reporting that Chris Brown withdrew his name from the Kid’s Choice Awards.

Getting pregnat at 16 is not a crime, and stars don’t get away with it ,the media has a field day with it.They also go jail just like everybody else.I’m with you but we live in America and this happens everywhere not just in hollywood

I hate to say this, but you guys are jumping the gun here. What happened to innocent until proven guilty. It is because of overbearing mothers or the soccer moms that we are having so many problems. First it was an action figure that you guys were lied (Al Snow) because you thought Head was a dismember head instead of a manakin. Now it is a man that hasn’t even had a real day in court. SO if your kid got accused of killing someone, would you drop them on their butts. Have fun being filled of hate.

I’m torn. He hasn’t been convicted of anything yet. But the last thing I want to see if kids looking up to a man who hits his girlfriend. I think this would call for some serious discussions with my children (thank goodness they are too young to know about these things!)

Tara, not only do you write like a 3rd grader, you have the mentality of one, which causes me to believe that you’re writing under a fictitious age. If not, then I can only hope that you’re open to educating yourself on the real issues of domestic violence for the sake of your daughter. As adults we are responsible for the safety and well being of our children. By allowing Chris Brown to remain a contender for the kid’s choice awards, Nickelodeon, is in essence telling our young girls that it’s okay to accept abuse in the name of “love”, and our young men that it’s okay to abuse women. Kids are acute observers and emulate singers, actors, models, etc. any body that is a high profile and of celebrity status. Let’s begin to teach our children, boys and girls, that there are positive role models, and celebrities worth being envious of emulating. How about our President and First Lady?!…..does it always have to be someone gyrating to a beat, expsosing their bodies, cursing and shooting?

“Give me a break”,
I don’t even have to say anything right now, your stupidity shines through your ignorant responses quite brightly.

Argell March 11, 2009, 4:54 PM

GIVE ME A BREAK needs to take a break
It’s all about being a role model. Getting knocked up at 16 like Brit’s lil sis, taking near-porno pix like Miley are not against the law and are
obviously not against momlogic’s so called high standards when it comes to certain kinds(race)of celebs.

GIVE ME A BREAK March 11, 2009, 5:49 PM

Amy you make me sick with your ignorance. If Tara wants to take her daughter to buy his CD she has the right. What kind of example is Rhianna setting. She is a poor excuse for a woman, taking him back.If it happens again it’s her fault!!!!!You seem to think ur so right.

angela March 11, 2009, 7:37 PM

Amy you seem to be shinning brightly.Grow up you act like a child.Argell what are you talking about, race has nothing to do with it.You seem think everything you say is right.Rhianna’s not a role model. and neither or you.Get over your self ,try to act mature.

angela March 11, 2009, 7:50 PM

Excuse me I should have wrote you seem to think, And herself should have been put together,I don’t want Ms.Perfect Amy calling me out on it.

Amy March 11, 2009, 9:39 PM

You know what…I am sorry. I am being a bi*ch and I can totally own that. I just feel so frustrated when people say that stuff about abused woman. It’s an awful thing and nobody asks for it. So, my apologies. You are right, I sounded like a bi*chy no it all. When really I just felt really offended by people sound like what happened it ok and that when a woman goes back she deserves it. She doesn’t she may be stupid but she never deserves it. Vice versa with a man. I have known a man to be abused and it made me just as ill/ So, Again, sorry for being so rude. I still stand by my take on the subject however I could have been way cooler about it.

Amy March 11, 2009, 10:01 PM

see I am not perfect, I wrote no it all instead of know it all. lol.

mommella March 11, 2009, 11:38 PM

obviously Nick carries on with it just to get more audience… they’re upholding showbiz more than values

Give me a break March 12, 2009, 8:44 AM

Well Amy it is wrong for anyone to put their hands on anybody else.Did u happen to watch Ellen yesterday? Well P Dide”,Excuse my spelling”said we did’nt know the whole story. He also said we don’t know who hit who first, which led me to believe maybe she also struck him.It really does’nt matter anyway you look at it,it should’nt have happened.I to got a little carried away yesterday.NO she does’nt deserve it,I just wish she would do the right thing and get away from him.I don’t want my daughter looking up to either of them.

I would like to comment on several of the other choices in the KCA categories:
Next Top Model? The Simpsons? Iron Man? Dark Knight? George Lopez? I’m confused … aren’t these all rated PG-13? I thought the KCA demographic is under the age of 13. “I Kissed a Girl” for best song?!!! What the heck! I don’t get it. Seriously, are parents purposely exposing their kids to these forms of media intended for adult audiences? To me, that’s the moral equivalent to poisoning your child with Drano. Someone please explain to me why “I Kissed a Girl” is OK to have on a KCA ballot.

CHRIS BROWN IS A TEENAGER and he needs help not more criticsm. I cannot believe that mothers are helping to torture this kid instead of trying to be encouraging him to get help and see God’s forgiveness and come back a better man. ****** Rihanna is not innocent****. IF HE WAS YOUR SON WOULD YOU BE BE JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON TO TORTURE HIM? **

There is a double standard going on here.

Kelly Bensimon (a reality show star) beat up her boyfriend, where are the TV shows, PSA’s and blogs about this?**

WOMEN BEAT UP MEN TOO, WHERE IS THE OPRAH SPECIAL?**

I just found this: Housewives of New York City’ Star Kelly Bensimon Allegedly Beat Up Boyfriend

The story is on FOX NEWS AND THE NY POST.
