Girl Banned from Wearing Tux to Prom

Should a high school girl be allowed to wearing a tuxedo to her prom? School officials say no.
UPDATE: According to a local Indiana TV station the senior girl will be able to wear a tux to prom after the school said Friday that officials had reversed their original decision.
The School Superintendent Robert L. Taylor issued the following statement:
"School policy for this year's prom will be that all attendees shall wear appropriate formal attire with no gender-based attire requirements imposed. Female students will be permitted to wear tuxedos if they chose," the release stated.
A 17-year-old Boone County, Indiana girl has sued the Lebanon School District after her high school principal told her she could not wear a tuxedo to her prom and would have to wear a dress instead.
The Lebanon High School senior, whose name is not revealed in the lawsuit, is a lesbian and does not wear dresses because she thinks they express a sexual identity that she does not embrace, court filings said.
School attorney Kent Frandsen said the district has had its policy on prom attire for years. The district is exploring whether it must legally allow a girl to wear a tuxedo to the prom.
The girl's attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana has asked a federal court to issue an injunction requiring the school to let her wear the same formal attire to the prom as male students.
Martina Walters, a student at the Lebanon High, says most of her friends support the girl's right to wear a tuxedo. "Mostly everybody thinks, wow, this is stupid." Walters said students will be staging a rally wearing tuxedo t-shirts in solidarity of the girl.
Walters believes one of the reasons her school has an issue with a girl wearing a prom dress is because it could open the door for a guy who wants to come to the prom in a dress.
Do you think their needs to be gender-specific dress codes for prom?
Of course she should be able to wear a tux!
im with you Spookygirl and Michelle. tux on a girl, no biggie. i too would rather them were a tux then a slutty dress that some young girl put on!!
And if there is a boy who wants to wear a gown to the prom, because that’s HIS sexual identity…what’s the problem with THAT?!
I hope this young lady has a wonderful prom in her handsome tux! :-)
Of course it´s wrong.
If they want to “express their sexual identity” then they can go to the lesbian, gay, transsexual, lady-boys, transgender, every-other-fricken-wierdo-attentionwhore prom.
How typical that again a gal get´s her wish, and young men get mocked by a feminist lesbian and the syncopating MOM´s.
That’s sooo stupid! Let her wear a tux!
My school had a “formal” instead of prom (in Canada, so prom isn’t the big thing that it seems to be in the USA). Anyway, if I had gone, I was going to wear a suit! I had one ready from a friend of mine that I was going to wear. And not because I’m a lesbian or have any issues with dresses. I just thought it would be hilarious! Besides that, a few of my guy friends went in kilts, so it would’ve made for some great pics. I didn’t end up going, but I don’t think my school would’ve had any problem with it. Get over it. Like others have said, it’s a lot better than all the slutty dresses out there! They just don’t want to deal with a guy who wants to wear a dress someday.
I´ll explain it to you in easy to understand words.
I don´t mock your gayness by flaunting my heterosexuality on a Christopher street parade, and you don´t mock men by aping them in a tux on a prom.
Oh, and a Kilt is NOT a dress. Try insinuating this out loud in a Scottish pub, and you´ll be lucky to come out without a serious booboo or two.
Girls rather wear tux rather than those slutty prom dresses, at least a tux isn’t slutty, the people should just remodel it to be a bit feminine but still remaining the male bits
So of course she should be able to wear a tux, lesbian or not. It doesn’t have to be making a statement. The point is why should you care? As long as it’s formal it should meet the requirements. This makes me nervous. I’m a girl planning to wear a tux to prom too. I’m going all out for it. My tux is going to look better than the majority of the guys i bet. :]]
Gee they let females wear pants to school so why not prom? The sexual bias just won’t go way.
Yes she should be able to wear a tux and any guy wanting wear a dress should wear a dress. It’s time to have an open mind and expect that people are different. Flaunt what you’ve got and be proud of it.
“is a lesbian and does not wear dresses because she thinks they express a sexual identity that she does not embrace, court filings said”
??? That makes no sense to me. How is it a sexual identity. Is SHE trying to say that SHE isn’t a SHE? Wonder if SHE made the courts address HER as a man? Whether SHE embraces it or not SHE IS a woman. I think it’s the equiv of men dressing like women because deep down, they’re a woman. Hogwash.
With that being said, why did SHE have to make it a big issue anyway? Why didn’t SHE just show up? I don’t care what SHE wears. I’m sure most people wouldn’t care. If SHE kept HER mouth shut and just went I doubt it would be an issue.
Why is the principal so narrowminded and ignorant? That is NOT Retro We Can Believe In!
Frankly, I like dressing in drag, and dressing inbetween. For women who want to wear tuxedo, but not male tuxedo, there has actually long been a tuxedo made for women. Le Smoking by Yves Saint Laurent. The First Lady of France wore it to his funeral last summer, with one of his sheer blouse inside.

I don’t see anything wrong with being a lesbian. I don’t see anything wrong with being a woman. I think the two can meld nicely. WHY NOT be proud to be a woman? It doesn’t mean that just because you are proud to be a woman and embrace “feminine” things you have to sleep with men. YOU define YOU and not your clothes or you labels. And if she is more comfortable in a tux, then go for it, where is the harm???
Sexual indentity issue aside - many top notch designer, like Armani & Valentino designed tuxes for ladies in their last collections. And many of the hottest Hollywood ladies have been seen wearing them like Kate Hudson.
So why not? It’s only fashion.
As far as sexual indentity, I bet pretty everyone in this student’s high school knows she’s a lesbain and won’t except her to wear a dress. I’m not sure that it’s a big deal to them. Beleive it or not, some straight American high school kids are not bothered by the gays or lesbians.
hans - did I SAY that a kilt is a dress? No. Read what I said, not what you think I said. What I said was that a girl in a suit and some guys in kilts would’ve been some great pictures. I didn’t say they were in dresses. Read, don’t assume.

I think this is bull. Let the poor girl wear what she wants at the prom. A tux, yes, is WAAAY better than slutty dresses I’ve seen.
That school, all it’s saying is “oh don’t be gay, it’s bad”, and DUDE/DUDETTE That’s TOTALLY racist and harassment! Some countries allow you to be gay, and almost nobody in a Teen life today is bothered by a gay person.
I would rather see a guy in a long dress, or a pink skirt, because it doesn’t matter to me of what he wears (well, than to see him with far-below-the-waist pants showing off his boxer (seriously, they have no idea what they’re wearing) Pretty much I’d rather see that, and people can wear what they want to wear (well, almost anything), and I would even like to see a girl in a tux or never wears skirts because it’s better than showing off your breasts ot see how large they are to seduce men.
The school needs to back down, step back, and CHILL OUT! Let the girl wear the Tux-&-Tie, it’s her, it’s how she expresses herself!
Dang, Hans, you’re a total jerk-face. How is wearing a tux “mocking” a man in any way? I seriously don’t get it, and I would love a coherent explanation from you that doesn’t involve a bunch of “hogwash” about your deluded views on gender identity. You seem like more of an “attentionwhore” than most ‘mos I know.
the girl in the suit looks like lady gaga :L

This is insane! Girls can wear cut down to there, slit up to there, pinned together with ribbon bits of nothing dresses and are fine, but if a girl wants to wear a tux they say no? Give me a break! I’d rather my daughter wear a tux then 3/4s of the ugly, slutty prom dresses I’ve seen in the last few years!
