Tonight, "South Park" opens up its thirteenth season with the Jonas Brothers passing out purity rings to Kenny and his girlfriend.
What's the latest accessory to grace the bodies of teens wearing barely-there skirts and tummy-bearing tops? Purity rings. Selena Gomez, the star of "Wizards of Waverly Place," wears one on her left ring finger that says: "True Love Waits." Jordin Sparks defended hers on the VMAs. The Jonas Brothers don silver metal bands to signify their promise to God to remain virgins until marriage. And now the Joe Bros. are even passing them out on "South Park!"
"American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks says of her ring: "My parents gave me a purity ring and talked to me about waiting until I'm married to have sex. It wasn't forced; it just made perfect sense. It's going to be awesome to say to my husband that I waited my whole life for him."
Sociologists found more than one in eight American teens have made a virginity vow to God. The good news: Studies have shown that purity pledges lower the risk of early sexual activity and teen pregnancy. The bad news: Researchers have also found that girls who make purity pledges were six times as likely to engage in oral sex than virgins who hadn't taken a pledge, and were also less likely to use a condom the first time they go all the way.

It’s a trend. All the cool kids have purity rings, woo hoo! Except they’re still giving handjobs in movie theaters because that’s not sex, according to them.
If you’ve actually got a commitment to God, you don’t need an overpriced piece of jewelry marketed to advertise your commitment to God. In Lent, the gospels speak of the need to communicate your prayers to God and God alone - prayer and commitment are for God, not for the masses. Don’t shout your intentions from the rooftops to gain earthly praise; pray quietly to the Lord.

That depends on whose wearing them!
In theory, I think purity rings are a great idea. The individual who puts one on must choose to do so as a sincere expression of faith, or in an empty pursuit of following a trend. Even if it is a trend, though, I think we could all agree there are far worse trends.

I don’t think you can plan for when you decide to get close to a male. Seriously, how many people can actually think during that time? Feeling is always a huge factor. I think the only time a purity ring is valid for someone is if they have been in a situation where they could have had sex before but didn’t. They know they can think in the situation and use their beliefs and then they can get a purity ring. It is a good idea, but it’s ALSO a trend; but not in the bad way!
