FOX: Actress Mia Farrow began a fast of water only in solidarity for the people of Darfur Monday, attempting to abstain from all food for three weeks.

The 64-year-old actress says she began the fast "as a personal expression of outrage at a world that is somehow able to stand by and watch innocent men, women and children needlessly die of starvation, thirst and disease."

The "Rosemary's Baby" star and U.N Goodwill Ambassador has visited the war torn region 11 times over the past five years.

The United Nations says up to 300,000 people have died in Darfur, where ethnic African rebel groups have been fighting the Arab-dominated national government for six years.

Farrow told FOXNews.com in a statement that the crisis deepened last month following the issue of a warrant for Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir's arrest, who responded by expelling 13 international aid agencies from the country, including Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam and Save the Children.

But the actress' selfless act is not without risk. At just 110 pounds, she has said that both her children and her doctor are worried for her as she undertakes the daunting physical task of a hunger strike. Given her small frame, doctors estimate she will be able to last a maximum of three weeks.

Still, the actress has remained steadfast in her dedication to the strike, encouraging others to follow suit.

"I hope human rights advocates and citizens of conscience around the world will join me in some form of fasting, even if for one day, she said. "And when I can no longer continue, I pray another will take my place, and another -- until finally there is justice and peace for Darfur's people."

I guess it’s one way to walk a mile in the shoes of the people she’s concerned about, and while it might not bring about huge change, it gets the issue some attention. Unfortunately,I guess, lots of people think she’s a bit nutty and so might dismiss what she’s doing too quickly? Hunger striking is a pretty common way to make a point of protest.

God bless her. She is making an example. I pray she doesnt pay the ultimate sacrifice. She mustve been prepared to even make a decision that could put her in that position. There is plenty enough food in this world to go around. No one should have to go hungry unless they choose to.
