UPI: The husband of a Texas woman who died of swine flu last month wants to sue the world's largest hog producer and pig processor for her death.

Attorneys for Steven Trunnell have filed a petition in district court seeking to discover what role a Mexican pig farm owned by Smithfield Foods Inc. may have played in the swine flu outbreak, the Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday.

"The conditions in which they allow this pig farm to operate ... would not be allowed in the United States," says attorney Marc Rosenthal of the Texas law firm Rosenthal and Watson.

Trunnell's wife, Judy, 33, was the first U.S. citizen to die of swine flu.

She had delivered a healthy baby girl by Cesarean section several days earlier.

Health officials said she had "chronic underlying health conditions" but her husband said that was incorrect and his wife enjoyed excellent health.

money > mourning

This is ridiculous. The guy is being completely unreasonable. Few people have died from the swine flu and blame can go to nobody.

That’s so typically American (no offense). Sue for stupid things. I’m sorry for the loss, but guess what, a lot of people got sick…some died..that is the way things are. If he got Ebola, would she sue the tropical nations because hey, it came from somewhere in the foliage? This suit is ridiculous. Hope it gets thrown out.

I am American but good grief, no he doesn’t represent me. I’m sick of people having to always find someone to blame. He thinks this is his golden opportunity to get set financially… sorry buddy, your lawsuit is ridiculous.

now go mourn your wife and take care of your daughter.

If you watched any of the new reports on where the swine flu originated you would all know that the area that had the most deaths is an area in Mexico where illness has increase exponentially since the pig farms were built. You would also know that the unfortunate people who live near these farms, which are in horrible condition, have been trying for years to have them cleaned up or moved out but the Mexican government won’t do any thing to help these people. The people believe that these farms are not only polluting their water but also the air as they can smell the stink & filth from the farms. SO I APPLAUD Steven Trunnell and I pray that his lawsuit can make a difference for ALL the people affected by these disease infected pig farms.

Has the WHO determined that this firm had infected pigs? I’ve not seen anything on the net that would indicate that they did. I’m pretty sure that it would be big news. If it has been determined, why has the WHO not taken action and do the customary slaughter and disposal of all animals that were possibly exposed to the virus? And implement disinfection protocols of the facilities? Why isn’t Steven suing Patient 0? After all, he/she had the unmitigated gall to get sick in the first place. How did this guy decide to target this firm? I’m all about cleaning the pig farms up, but his suit is still ridiculous because that is an entirely different issue. You could be at a research facility where the sanitary conditions are impeccable and have some kind of infectious biohazard occur. The condition of the farm is moot (in this case) considering one infected animal that was placed in any populace anywhere in Mexico at any farm infected the pigs. How about that guy that sneezed in your random direction and you got sick? You can get sick from a random animal or bird anywhere. At any time. You walk right outside and get pooped on by a bird and get infected with a disease or parasite. Or step in doggie doo and track it through your house to your kids. Who are you going to sue then? As I said, by ALL means, clean up the facilities in Mexico, but I don’t feel this guy has any reason other than misguided grief and dare I say it…GREED in play for this suit. If I were to do anything, I would lobby the governments to produce enough vaccines so that everyone has a chance to be protected.

i think this is grief talking, not to say its right but he did just lose his wife :(

I have to agree with RR. This guy did lose his wife. He is stricken with grief and yeah it may not make it right but this is his way. Grief makes us do crazy things but just let him do what he needs to do so he can get back to life.
