Connie Culp, a mother of two, was shot in the face by her husband in 2004. He was sentenced to seven years in jail, but she has to live with the effects of his violent act for life.
According to the AP, the blast shattered her nose and cheeks, the roof of her mouth, and an eye. Hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face. She needed a tube in her windpipe to breathe. Only her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip, and chin were left. She endured 30 operations to try to fix her face.
Now she has undergone the nation's first face transplant.
We wish this mom the best of luck on her road to recovery. What an incredible story.
