Tired of pilates and yoga and looking for a more exciting outlet to stay in shape? How about throwing on a costume and some roller skates and getting one of the best workouts ever?
Roller derby is making a comeback, and moms everywhere are loving it. Though it started as a professional sport in the 1920s, by the 1970s roller derby teams started disappearing. Now, the flat track roller derby is making a comeback and because women are always looking for new and exciting ways to stay in shape, derby leagues are popping up everywhere.
The workouts are super intense. In a Maryland league, the women practice twice a week, and they have a coach who puts them through sit-ups, push-ups, and stretches to improve their endurance. Their coach, Travis "Groper Cleavage" McGlaughlin, says: "Racing around the rink may look easy, but it's not. It takes a lot of strength and stamina." One of the moms competing says her legs have become "as strong as pythons." Another asks, "Why go to the gym if you have roller derby?"
Besides the toning, calorie burning, and weight loss, the women become tough: They learn how to fight and how to fall and, they say, if they get knocked down, they just get up and keep on rollin'.
Sounds to us like a great way to release some stress, make new friends, and get a kick-ass workout.
