A plea deal has been struck between prosecutors and pop star Chris Brown.
Today, in a Los Angeles courtroom, singer Chris Brown copped a guilty plea for felony assault against his former girlfriend, singer Rihanna. The terms of the deal include five years' probation, 180 days of community service, and participation in domestic violence counseling. The infamous February 8 altercation made headlines as pictures of a badly beaten Rihanna circulated around the web.
Judge Patricia Schnegg issued a stay-away order restricting Brown's contact with Rihanna, who was also in court today. The order requires that Brown and Rihanna stay at least 50 yards from each other, except at industry events, where the distance is reduced to 10 yards. The judge advised Rihanna that the order also means she's to stay away from him as well. Brown will be formally sentenced on August 5.
Brown spoke softly throughout the hearing as he waived his rights and told the judge he understood the gravity of his plea. "I think it's commendable you took responsibility for your conduct," Schnegg told Brown, adding that she hoped "the terms and conditions of your probation will have some meaning."
