Brazilian Court Orders Boy Back to His Father

After five long years, a Brazilian court has agreed to return 8-year-old Sean Goldman to his father.

David Goldman and Sean

A lawyer for Sean's father David says a federal court in Brazil has ordered the boy to be returned to his dad in the U.S. by Wednesday.

Goldman married Sean's mother, Bruna -- who is Brazilian -- in 1999. In June of 2004, Bruna took Sean to Brazil for a planned two-week vacation to visit her parents. While away, Bruna called David and informed him their marriage was over and that she and their son were not coming home -- ever. Then Bruna, even though she was still legally married to David in the States, remarried and was soon pregnant again. Tragically, Bruna died in childbirth.

In the aftermath, rather than returning Sean to his father, Bruna's new husband instead filed a petition to have HIS name put on Sean's birth certificate. David has been fighting since then to have his son brought back to him, even enlisting the help of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama.

FINALLY! I am so glad they ordered him to be returned home to his father. I cannot believe it took them so long.

I hadn’t heard about this story, but good for him to fight so hard for his son! It’s great that the child was finally returned home, and terrible that it took so long to happen.

I am so happy Sean is being returned to his father - it’s about time!!! God bless both of them. I will keep them in my prayers. I hope to see a follow-up on a Dateline or 48 Hours program soon.
