Fairy Tale Happily-Ever-After Reality Check

For anyone who's ever wondered what happens after the happily-ever-after in fairy tales, photographer Dina Goldstein has a few ideas.

Like most little girls, Dina Goldstein's four-year-old is into princesses. "Mostly Belle," the 40-year-old photographer told momlogic. But her tot's interest in the pervasive world of Disney princesses was not the initial inspiration for Goldstein's photo series called "Fallen Princesses."

"My mother had breast cancer -- it put me in a bit of a depression. At that time, my daughter was watching all these princess stories," says the Canadian photographer. "That's when I started thinking about all the real situations women have to deal with." The result: images of Cinderella down-and-out at a dive bar, Snow White saddled with a couple kids and what looks like a disinterested princely husband, and Rapunzel, Goldstein's favorite in her series, as a cancer patient.

The wildly popular series of haunting, unprincess-like scenarios is not without critics. "Believe it or not," says Goldstein, "I've been told I didn't go far enough with the images. Like Cinderella should be on heroin or something." But she disagrees. "My intention was not to put the characters in 'dirty situations,' but to just make a statement about real life."

Thought-provoking photography isn't the only project Goldstein's working on -- she's also 7 1/2 months pregnant. Still, she's currently adding a few more princesses to her series: "I'm going to be doing an Ariel and a Princess and the Pea."

Isn’t it funny how we teach our little girls all about princesses and fairy tales…all so they can grow up to be smacked with reality?! I’m still waiting on my prince with his white horse!

The pictures are awesome! I couldn’t help but laugh at Jasmine in combat! Rapunzel with all her hair! Belle from “Beauty” & the Beast…took me a minute to get that one! lol.

I’m sharing these pics with friends! Love them!

Thanks so much for sharing this! As a fairy tale illustrator myself, I couldn’t help but be inspired by Goldstein’s work.
