Marijuana Mamas!

Is pot the new pilates?

Gina Kaysen Fernandes: A new wave of reefer madness is sweeping suburbia -- but it's not just teenagers who are lighting up. Middle-aged, middle-class soccer moms are smoking pot ... a lot. These women aren't stoners: they're teachers, lawyers, and, perhaps, even your neighbor who prefers puffing a joint to sipping chardonnay.

"Marijuana is the magic in my life that helps me unwind, stay sane, and have more energy," says Sonia, a 24-year-old mother from Los Angeles. Working full-time as a restaurant manager leaves Sonia feeling stressed out and drained at the end of the day. She smokes once or twice daily to relax. "I have a stressful job, it's something that helps me wind down so I don't take out my frustration on my husband or my child."

Sonia became a mother at the age of 22 and suffered from some depression. She turned to marijuana to help curb the baby blues. A doctor later diagnosed Sonia with anxiety and wrote her a prescription for the herbal remedy. Sonia gets her stash from a medicinal marijuana clinic and takes comfort in knowing the pot she smokes is legal and high quality.

Mary is a 37-year-old, self-employed mother in Seattle who smokes pot several times a week. "It is relaxing, fun, and once in a while I self-medicate for cramps or headaches," said Mary. She says she prefers smoking to drinking beer because it's easier on the body and has fewer calories. Mary buys her bags from a dealer, making it more risky because "there's still a real danger of being arrested," says Mary.

The website, Chikii.com, surveyed hundreds of women nationwide between the ages of 25 and 60 years old. Out of that group, 52% admitted to using marijuana at least ten times a year. 27% smoked between one and seven times a week. And 78% of those women knew someone who got high on a regular basis.

The results of recent surveys are no surprise to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML. "These findings are indicative of women's willingness to admit to the social stigma that was so high in the 1970s and 80s," said St. Pierre.

Both women who shared their stories with momlogic say that many of their friends smoke weed. But while it seems "marijuana mamas" are everywhere, this silent majority prefers to stay in the shadows. "They think if they admit it, it makes them a bad mom," says Sonia, who believes the opposite is true. "It makes me a better mother. It clears my head and allows me to focus on my child." Mary says it's important to be a responsible smoker "by doing it mindfully, only when I have downtime."

Sonia has a 2-year-old and is a few years away from the dreaded drug talk. But she doesn't plan to hide her habit from her son. "I want to be honest, I don't want him to feel marijuana is an evil thing," said Sonia. Mary says she's very open about her drug use with her daughter, Sierra. "We talk about responsible use pretty often," says Mary. Both women say they never smoke in the house or in front of their children.

There's a lot of debate over how to talk to kids about using drugs without sounding like a hypocrite, especially if you're the one hitting the bong. Zero-tolerance proponents believe you must support abstinence only. But advocates say a more real-world approach is to discuss drug use in moderation. This method is detailed in a pamphlet called "Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs," which is distributed by the California PTA.

This growing group of ganja smokers certainly has the attention of lawmakers. A renewed debate is heating up over legalizing (or at minimum, taxing the medicinal sales of) marijuana to cash in on this potential cash cow. According to NORML, marijuana remains the fourth largest cash crop in America, in spite of the estimated $10 billion that law enforcement spends annually to attempt to outlaw the plant. In California, marijuana is the number-one cash crop. Thirteen states have laws on the books that allow for medicinal use of marijuana. The most recent federal survey finds more than 100 million Americans have tried pot at some point, and more than 14 million used it in the past month. "I think a lot of moms are starting to loosen up," says Sonia.

Both of these moms support legalizing marijuana. "It will help our economy, help our state, and take away that stigma," said Sonia. Mary believes pot smoking should be about personal choice, not politics. "I'm an adult and I make life or death decisions every day. The drug war has killed lots of people; smoking pot hasn't killed anyone."

What do you think? Are these moms on the right track -- or are they whacked out on more than just weed?

man, all i can say is that I have a very large number of friends that are complete deadheads because of marijuana and two of my friends have moved onto cocaine. One has been shot in his attempts to aquire the funds to support his habits. I don’t know about the medical benefits but I certainly know the negatives and I highly dissaprove of people, mothers no less, indulging in illicit behaviors. And to those saying it’s ok to break a law that you think is dumb, that is incorrect. One is dumb to blindly follow. The correct response is to question why the law was made and become properly informed. Than it is to work to get that law changed, except in the case where peoples lives are at stake due to that law. No one ever died from refraining to smoke a joint. The laws not life threatening so it is the responsibility of a citizen to work to get it changed if you see fit, not to break it.

this is ridiculous…..it is a cop out escape from reality. It impairs you and has an impact on your parenting abilities. Bottom line, whether you agree or not it IS illegal and you are breaking the law and setting an example with that.

marijuana never killed anyone-in fact studies recently underway show that THC can shrink brain tumors and protect you from lung cancer

I agree with this group and would fully support legalization. Think of everything that the revenue from selling and taxing pot could provide for the country. When is the last time you heard of a serious crash caused from a pot smoker?? It is usually crashes from alcohol or someone texting while driving.

I haven’t bothered to read all the pros and cons, blah, blah, blah, but from a health point of view - and of course - we know that there are so many other things that are bad for us (yeah, yeah, heard that)…but can anyone say that taking any kind of hot smoke into our lungs can be good for us and not harmful???? How many years can we go smoking pot (like cigarettes) before our lungs are destroyed. Let’s not be in denial about that before we say nothing’s wrong with it - not talking about what’s legal or illegal and not talking about people who are smoking it that are terminally ill.

I don’t care what you call yourselves, how you try to glamorize the habit, or how you try to rationalize the illegal use of this substance, you’re still just a stoner. I’m divorcing a pot smoker after 23 years of marriage. He can’t do anything, go anywhere, be around anyone (not even his children) without first disappearing to smoke a bong. It’s disgusting, it stinks, and he’s a disappointment and an embarrassment to his teenagers and adult children (3 of whom ended up in therapy). If you other users think somehow you are different, better, or immune from certain consequences, you’re fooling yourselves.

I THINK WEED SHOULD BE LEGAL JUST LIKE ALCOHOL IS. IT CALMS YOU DOWN. IF YOU HAVE A STRESSFUL DAY AT WORK OR WITH THE KIDS,GO AND RELIEVE SOME OF THE STRESS. I DON’T BELIEVE SOME OF THE STUFF THE GOVERNMENT SAYS ABOUT WEED. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT.

Parents who admit to their age appropriate children that they smoke pot are not telling them to relieve their guilty consciences. I told my children because I chose not to be a hypocrite and lie to them. Kids who become drug addicts become drug addicts not because their parents told them they take drugs but because of a lack of decent upbringing. Kids learn from example and my kids never saw me fall down drunk or drive under the influence of anything. My kids learned from a good example and had discipline in their lives and continuity and consistence and love. That’s what it takes to raise good, responsible kids. It has nothing to do with drug use unless that drug use is keeping you from doing right by your kids and has overtaken your life to the point that the drug rules you.

i know there is always 2 sides of any good debate. my side is for legalization. i am a mother of 3 boys and my life is stressful…….but that is not why i smoke. i generally love the feeling. as i grow my mind seems further away from wonderment and curiosity with all the things going on in my life, in the world. i feel less enlightened. i want to be more enlightened not less. i actually feel closer to spirituality when i smoke. i feel nothing but love for everything, even bugs. my kids laugh at me cause i can’t kill palmetto bugs! my oldest is aware that i smoke. but, just like driving a car or drinking there is a time for it. i believe 18 and older. i don’t think that makes me a hipocrite at all. if he chooses to i hope it will be legal for him. i don’t think pot smokers are criminal.as far as driving…people go out to dinner have a few drinks with their kids in tow and drive home. i was a server so i saw alot of that. most smokers are at home or walking or riding bikes with their kids! you are a lot less impaired off a joint than you are off a beer. i have done both so i know. how many of these opposers have ever tried it? try it once…you will not die or get addicted! then tell me your opinion of it. if it were legal we wouldn’t need these smugglers to shoot an kill people!! we would be able to get it from the store. i also smoke cigs which is legal and over addictive. i loathe it but, i can’t stop. if i didn’t want to smoke pot, i wouldn’t, it’s that simple. as with ANYTHING when you want to do something and you can’t it sucks. some people fly off the handle when they don’t get what they want, others graciously except it.that comes with anything in life. there is a lot of silly old outdated laws everywhere in the country being broken everyday so don’t YOU be a hipocrite….make sure you look at all the laws in your state to make sure you aren’t breaking any before you tell me i’m setting some bad example by breaking an unjust or outdated law. it’s illegal to speak in an elevator in

Way to go AOL; yet another breaking news article comes 20 years to late. This has been going on for years and you still try to make a headline out of this. Yes, the whole world is smoking pot and Aol must have a contact buzz to try to pass this as news. Humans have been smoking this stuff for ever, lets just legalize it and get rid of some national debt. Stupid antiquated, outdated, scared burocrat, neo-cons are ruining this country by continually stuffung their pockets with our money and going to the beach with it…..maybe someone could do some investigative reporting on why it’s NOT legal and what a cash cow Nancy Regans “War on Drugs” is for city, state, government, and pork barrel spending.

I am for the LEGALIZATION of marijuana. I haven’t smoked for years but I definatly would if it was made legal. It is much better than alcohol. As for my children, they are grown and I don’t worry about how they will take this. TO EACH HER OWN.

I’m so happy to find out that this many moms smoke for anxiety! I also use it for nausea (which i have every single morning), headaches, a mood stabilizer and a get up and go. I am a very good mother to my children. They never go without. They know that they are loved without a doubt. They are not abused. I don’t forget to feed them or that they are here. I don’t smoke weed to stay stoned or buzzed… If i didn’t smoke i would be a yelling crying uncontrollable mess.

I agree! Legalize it. The government should focus more on drugs such as crack, cocaine, heroin… things that actually cause serious addiction. I have never heard of one parent that would sell their child for pot. I’ve never heard of anyone selling off everything that they own in life just for crack… I’ve smoked off an on since I was a teenager. I have never turned to anything stronger because of the ‘evil’ weed. God created the seed and the soil that grows this wonderful plant. People are going to smoke pot regardless. Law officials need to focus on the real problems at hand. Such as the alcoholic abusive parent for example.

I’m a smoker and I have surprisingly gained clarity in my life. I have 2 kids one 6yo and the other 16mo. I can keep up with them now. It helps me focus on house chores, working out, work. Makes changing a stinky diaper alot less disgusting. There are alot more LOLS during the day…. Many benefits to the use of marijuana. FAR better the liquor or pain killers because both of those will kill you. Marijuana WONT EVER. Not in a million years. people need to wake up and light up. Enjoy.

You can see the mentality of many of the people who smoke on a regular basis, right here on the blog. The drug speaks for itself! wow, getting a bit nasty, defensive, agitated? jUst like my sister in law! Healthy eating and regular exercise will help your stress levels better than drug you can take. try it, you will be happier for it!
