Marijuana Mamas!

Is pot the new pilates?

Gina Kaysen Fernandes: A new wave of reefer madness is sweeping suburbia -- but it's not just teenagers who are lighting up. Middle-aged, middle-class soccer moms are smoking pot ... a lot. These women aren't stoners: they're teachers, lawyers, and, perhaps, even your neighbor who prefers puffing a joint to sipping chardonnay.

"Marijuana is the magic in my life that helps me unwind, stay sane, and have more energy," says Sonia, a 24-year-old mother from Los Angeles. Working full-time as a restaurant manager leaves Sonia feeling stressed out and drained at the end of the day. She smokes once or twice daily to relax. "I have a stressful job, it's something that helps me wind down so I don't take out my frustration on my husband or my child."

Sonia became a mother at the age of 22 and suffered from some depression. She turned to marijuana to help curb the baby blues. A doctor later diagnosed Sonia with anxiety and wrote her a prescription for the herbal remedy. Sonia gets her stash from a medicinal marijuana clinic and takes comfort in knowing the pot she smokes is legal and high quality.

Mary is a 37-year-old, self-employed mother in Seattle who smokes pot several times a week. "It is relaxing, fun, and once in a while I self-medicate for cramps or headaches," said Mary. She says she prefers smoking to drinking beer because it's easier on the body and has fewer calories. Mary buys her bags from a dealer, making it more risky because "there's still a real danger of being arrested," says Mary.

The website, Chikii.com, surveyed hundreds of women nationwide between the ages of 25 and 60 years old. Out of that group, 52% admitted to using marijuana at least ten times a year. 27% smoked between one and seven times a week. And 78% of those women knew someone who got high on a regular basis.

The results of recent surveys are no surprise to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML. "These findings are indicative of women's willingness to admit to the social stigma that was so high in the 1970s and 80s," said St. Pierre.

Both women who shared their stories with momlogic say that many of their friends smoke weed. But while it seems "marijuana mamas" are everywhere, this silent majority prefers to stay in the shadows. "They think if they admit it, it makes them a bad mom," says Sonia, who believes the opposite is true. "It makes me a better mother. It clears my head and allows me to focus on my child." Mary says it's important to be a responsible smoker "by doing it mindfully, only when I have downtime."

Sonia has a 2-year-old and is a few years away from the dreaded drug talk. But she doesn't plan to hide her habit from her son. "I want to be honest, I don't want him to feel marijuana is an evil thing," said Sonia. Mary says she's very open about her drug use with her daughter, Sierra. "We talk about responsible use pretty often," says Mary. Both women say they never smoke in the house or in front of their children.

There's a lot of debate over how to talk to kids about using drugs without sounding like a hypocrite, especially if you're the one hitting the bong. Zero-tolerance proponents believe you must support abstinence only. But advocates say a more real-world approach is to discuss drug use in moderation. This method is detailed in a pamphlet called "Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs," which is distributed by the California PTA.

This growing group of ganja smokers certainly has the attention of lawmakers. A renewed debate is heating up over legalizing (or at minimum, taxing the medicinal sales of) marijuana to cash in on this potential cash cow. According to NORML, marijuana remains the fourth largest cash crop in America, in spite of the estimated $10 billion that law enforcement spends annually to attempt to outlaw the plant. In California, marijuana is the number-one cash crop. Thirteen states have laws on the books that allow for medicinal use of marijuana. The most recent federal survey finds more than 100 million Americans have tried pot at some point, and more than 14 million used it in the past month. "I think a lot of moms are starting to loosen up," says Sonia.

Both of these moms support legalizing marijuana. "It will help our economy, help our state, and take away that stigma," said Sonia. Mary believes pot smoking should be about personal choice, not politics. "I'm an adult and I make life or death decisions every day. The drug war has killed lots of people; smoking pot hasn't killed anyone."

What do you think? Are these moms on the right track -- or are they whacked out on more than just weed?

Nothing says good parenting like openly using an expensive illegal chemical dependency from known drug dealers to cope with the human condition. Its a good example to teach the kids too. Whenever life gets hard, just toke up and lose yourself in the bongwater. Sure it’ll eat vital parts of your brain that you’ll need in later adulthood, but hell, just live for now. The now is whats important because there is no tommorrow. Right?

Substance abuse is just that, abuse. Parents have the responsibility to their children to be alert and aware and full participants in their kids’ lives. Anything less is what is really criminal about this trend.

I think police would rather deal with a stoner then a drunk when they pull someone over. A stoner is more compliet and will listen compared to a drunk who would try to fight or run from the police. I have had my cops tell me that and half my family tell me that cause there Police

i am a pot smoking grandma. i’ve raised 2 kids who have no drug or alcohol problems. they always knew i smoked. my older grandkids know i smoke. it helps me relax and relieves pain from a physical job. i haven’t had a drink in 10 years. it makes me feel like crap and also makes me very mean. i would rather chill at the end of the day! i come from a family of alcoholics, and i am the only one able to function productively. easy choice.

SK should start smoking china too.russia all of you guys need to smoke. Did i mention almost 0% damage to lungs OMG! no cancer!? WAKE UP stop drinking the jimmy jones kool-aid and smoke the tree god made.

I don’t know why everyone is comparing MJ use to alcohol. This article just brings up a point that a certain demographic of women smoke pot to relax, nothing about chemo patients, nothing whether its healthy or non, and this article has Nothing to do with alcohol, unless there is a way to brew liquid pot beverage, and in that case you may compare the two. I for one have never tried pot, nor do I want to, Regardless of whethers it illegal or legal. It just doesn’t appeal to me. Smoking pot in my eyes is weakness. Why do mom’s have to resort to a drug to wind down from stress? There are other more positive things they can do besides put substances in their bodies? It is sad to me that there is no other form of recreation to quell stress besides pot. Instaed of pot, why don’t they exercise? Many americans are overweight and need it…plus… exercise releases hormones and other chemicals in the body that improve judgement, thinking and cognition. These chemicals as far as I’m concernced are more natural to ones self than a plant. Why not spend time with their kids or read them a book instead of saying mommy smokes pot. Smoking pot to wind down is a lazy step if nothing else. Ooo yea..so much fun and relaxation to sit in a room or outside and not do anything or see anything with your own eyes ( I’ve heard pot makes some people halucinate, although since i haven’t tried it, i’m not sure) in any case, there are so many beautiful things to do and see in the world and especially with your kids. In my humble opinion you will be a better parent and be more beneficial to them by reading your kid a book, or take them on a historical trip, or play a sport with them ….expand their knowledge.. Some food for thought… Steve P

pothead hippie freaks….say that to Michael Phelps. jerk stereo-typical know-it-all. say that to Obama whom you elected who has admitted to smoking pot. and did you ever see “pumping Iron” with arnold smoking up? alot of “the leaders of the free world” smoke pot. defensive no. refuting your illogical tyrannical arcaic viewpoint of pot as being “sinister” is just stupid and outdated. like i said old folk and boomers your time is over you RUINED this country and Generation-X is taking over like it or not

The pigs don’t want it legalized, the judges don’t want it legalized, the lawers don’t want it legalized, guards don’t want it legalized, alcohol producers don’t want it legalized. We may heve to get armed and attack the pigpen untill the obey the laws, and stop using this as a way to MILK THE PUBLIC, and guarentee their jobs. Keep in mind that the US Govt. paid 2 universities to study the risks of POT. Both reached the same damn conclusion. The most dangerous thing about weed is getting caught. WAKE UP Govt.

I don’t think it is right for anyone to smoke pot for any reason. If you need drugs to relax from your job, you are in the wrong occupation. If you are high and a kid gets hurt what are you gonna tell the Dr. when you bring them in to the hospital? I do this to relax and forget my worries? what about your kids. Maybe it is ok for them to do it during school so they can “relax” and fail their classes. I don’t believe in drugs for any reason. Even to save a life, sorry to say but shouldn’t be allowed for any reason.

It’s against the law. You are all a bunch of criminals, no different that any other criminal. Those of you who “self medicate” or smoke to “relax” after work are addicts. They told me years ago if I have a martini every day after work, and I get stuck in traffic and think, “I should be home by now, enjoying my martini” that is proof that I’m an alcoholic. By the same standards, if you feel the same about your dope, you are a junkie. I don’t care how you try to paint it, YOU ARE A JUNKIE! They don’t call it “dope” for nothing.

I don’t drink when I am caring for my child, so why would I smoke pot while caring for my child? I don’t think it is okay to do anything that would impair your judgement while caring for a child. Too many things can go wrong too quick to risk something like that. Plus, I know quite a few people who started out smoking every now and then to relax, and now they can’t function or care for their kids before they get a chance to get high. And kids whose parents smoke in front of them are more likely to try harder drugs. Trust me, I know. My parents did it. Were still trying to get my brother of coke. He is only 17. Great parents.

Thrilled to see this article. I am a 64-year-old grandmother who has partaken for many years and have remained a responsible citizen, worker, home-owner, and mother/grandmother. I am sensible and do not drive when I smoke pot, but it is the ultimate cure for depression and is wonderful for tickling the creative bones. It got me through menopause. It is ridiculous that it is has not been legalized.

If you are stoned, you are simply NOT doing as effective of a job parenting than if you were not. This is laughable. You are not as focused as you would be if you were straight. The alcohol argument is stupid as well. Just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean you can be a good parent when you’re drunk. It certainly doesn’t justify being a stoned parent. Sorry, it just won’t fly.

I’ve always believed that pot is actually much less dangerous than alcohol and if treated with responsibility it certainly can be utilized much differently than it has been portrayed. I know people who are business people who smoke and they handle their businesses as pros, but I also have known the a few losers who “lose” themselves in pot. Same could be said of alcohol or any other substance (including food).

I cannot believe the people on here who are against marijuana, I am sure you think it is okay to drink a few glasses of wine before bed though right? And to the person who says that moms and dads are purchasing their bags on the corner. This doesn’t happen, people don’t normally buy marijuana on the street corner that is crack and dope, the real killers. I have smoked marijuana for 15 years and have never purchased it on a street corner nor have I ever ventured into smoking crack, doing cocaine, or shooting or snorting heroin! Those are the parents who do not deserve their children. Marijuana grows naturally and needs no processing to produce it or to use it.

I am a pot smoker. I gave up alcohol and other drugs because of the problems they caused me. I’ve been away from these drugs for 22 years, and never want to go back. I don’t ask my doctor for anti-depressants or sleeping pills or ANY mind altering drugs… I’ve got my pot, and thank you VERY much. To me Marijuana IS A MIRACLE DRUG! look at all the people it helps. And I have never seen anyone violent on it as with other drugs and alcohol. Let me smoke in peace please!!
