Mary Denney said she can't believe how her son's taking a bow and blowing a kiss on stage led was grounds for the superintendent to withhold his diploma. "I'm like, 'Did she not hand him his diploma?' I'm like, 'What's going on?'" Mary Denney said.
She said she and Justin both signed a code of conduct regarding the graduation when she picked up graduation tickets on Friday, but she doesn't think he violated it. "There was no misbehavior. Showboating is not misbehavior," Mary Denney said. "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior. There was no need of my son not getting his diploma."
Before the school began handing out diplomas, some students pulled out beach balls. One student was forced to sit away from his classmates with staff while police escorted another student behind the stage.
"No arrests were made. The individual that was escorted off the stage was asked to leave the civic center. He was to the point where the deputy was starting to get to the point where he wanted to arrest the individual, but gave him several opportunities to settle down. Eventually, he took off his cap and gown and threw it at the deputy and walked out the civic center," Cumberland County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Kevin Joyce said.
The deputy returned to the crowd and took another beach ball away from the students, but Mary Denney said School Area District 6 Superintendent Suzanne Lukas was still upset.
"When she got up there and started speaking, they threw out a couple more balls and she turned around and said, 'More people may not be graduating today if this continues,'" Mary Denney said.
While in his seat or waiting in line for his diploma, Justin Denney never touched a beach ball. After his name was called, he took a bow, blew a kiss to his family and pointed to friends, but he didn't get his diploma, leaving a whole family in disbelief.
"I said, 'What did she ask you?' And, he goes, 'She said, 'There's no fooling around up here,'' and he just kind of looked at her because he wasn't fooling around. He didn't consider that fooling around or misbehaving in any sense of the word, and she goes, 'Why do you feel you deserve your diploma?' He goes, 'Because I worked hard and I earned it,' and she goes, 'No go take your seat,'" Mary Denney said.
The crowd booed, but Justin Denney still doesn't have his diploma. Now, his mother wants her son to get what he's worked so hard for.
"It was appalling, and I want justice for my son. I want her to apologize to my son and I want her to hand him his diploma while he is in his cap and gown," Mary Denney said. Both of Justin Denney's grandparents are ill and one of their wishes was to see their grandson graduate from high school, something they didn't get to see happen Friday. Mary Denney said she is planning a graduation party for her son in two weeks, which, by then, she said she hopes she will have a photograph of her son with his diploma. News 8 tried to contact the district's superintendent and the school's principal, but neither returned the calls by Monday evening.

He shouldn’t have done any showboating, but that is not so bad he should have gotten his diploma. The ones with the beach balls should have been booted out of the place, they didn’t deserve their diploma. Teens have to learn how to have respect in formal occasions.
I don’t understand the big deal. These kids have worked their butts off for 12 years to get to this point. For many of them they are probably the first in the faamily to even graduate high school, why can’t they celebrate? Give me a break. These are kids.
not get a diploma b/c they bounced some beach balls? geesh, did you go to highschool at lockdown high and have no sense of fun or excitement?? yeah, maybe we’ve just gotten too stiff as a society and don’t know how to celebrate and not have rules smothering us.
She’s just being a self-important b!7@%. Ruining a kids future because she felt as though he should act differently. It’s not the time or place to tell someone they can’t graduate, they did what was required, they deserve to graduate. It isn’t her place to enforce discipline, it’s the parents. He’s out of school, this crazy woman is no longer an authority figure and is trying to ruin his life just so she can ‘flex’ her ‘power’. What a shameful way for her to set an example.

They’re high school diplomas, not doctorate degrees. The pig of a principal can’t get off her pedistool. Seriously. Stop staring at your doctorate and let these students enjoy their accomplishment.
Is this happening in America? I guess this school doesn’t believe in freedom expression. Reminds me of communism… everyone just acting like robots and no unique self expression allowed.

OBVIOUSLY THIS LADY OR TIGHT WAD DOES NOT HAVE ANY CHILDREN. IF SHE DID SHE WOULD HAVE A LITTLE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT HAPPINES IS FOR A TEEN THAT IS SEEING HIS LAST DAYS IN HIGH SCHOOL. THIS LADY SHOULD BE WORKING FOR THE MILITARY OR THE PRISON SYSTEM.

Yes- yes- yes -this is a perfict example of what democrats have become (liberal democrats). They are for the woman’s right to choose - just a moment, that is an incomplete sentance, the womans right to choose what? well to (kill) of corse! Now why are they for abortion along with gay rights and all other immoral subjects? Because they wish to have complete freedoms from God and his ways. That is why democrats try there best to remove religion from school as well as other places. They do not wont to feal bad about there sinfull lifestyls. Near 90% of all teachers in colledges and high schools are democrats along with the liberal media and hollywood. Simply put democrats love to be told what to do. They do not like to have to think for themselves, they wont someone to tell them everything. In like manner they wish to have controll over others. They love POWER. Democrats love to ban things- example the proper use of gun’s - ATV riding. They even try to stop other people from raising the hood of there cars to check there own oil. They think not only that they are smart but that they are vastly smarter than you are. The real fact is they are just the opposite, they have no real common sence about mechanical or electrical devices. They are the type to be afraid of the least little thang that come’s along- even a little wind and rain. So it is no surprise that this democrat femail who loves to userp authorty over a man, has done this and if left unchecked will go on to the next step.

WOW!!! My graduation was today, some of us was dancing across the stage and the principal just laughed and enjoyed it! This is supposed to be a happy moment and yes it is a formal situation but it’s also a celebration, this is insanity!!!
This is exactly why we have so many students dropping out of school. Its not because of drugs or lack of effort. These staff members think they own us. It starts with threatening to take away stuff to not allowing a student to graduate?!?!? How ignorant are these people? Some people just need to relax and know how to have fun, stop being anal over ever little thing that doesn’t happen the way you hope for. One senior from my school wasn’t even allowed to attend the graduation because she missed one to many days of school. They tried to keep her from a public event so she got a lawyer. Needless to say she went to the graduation. The staff of most high schools think we ignore the handbook they pass out cause we don’t follow rules. It’s not that we don’t want to follow the rules, its just they are ridiculous. Our seniors didn’t do any pranks this year cause they were told they wouldn’t be able to graduate. I would understand if these pranks would hurt somebody, but they are always harmless. The staff members need to lighten up a little, inmates have more freedom then high school students.
There were air horns going off at my graduation, and kids were dancing onto the stage.

this is so dumb…. what kind of rules are they putting in this school i mean the poor kid was just thanking his family…he never did anything wrong if anything the school should just apologize and give him his diploma he deserves i mean there is allot of students that “F!@#$ up” and people don’t do anything about it…. ahh this S#!t just pisses me off
This is ridiculous! Can we say powertrip? Poor kid, cut him some slack. He did work hard to get there. She ruined a moment he’ll never get back to make an example of him for the other kids. What a b*tch!
