WPXI: Channel 11 has learned the state is investigating a West Mifflin day care from which four 2-year-olds wandered away Tuesday. The toddlers walked out of the Walnut Grove Christian School and down an access road. They ended up 200 yards away in the middle of busy West Mifflin Street.

When E. Dorcett stepped out of a nearby gospel radio station for a break, he noticed four toddlers, one girl and three boys, in the road. He then watched as two truckers ran to save the kids.

"The Rent-A-Center guy -- he was running up and he grabbed two. The other trucker -- he grabbed two," said Dorcett.

"I was just in shock and disbelief. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was like a surreal moment, like I was dreaming. I was flabbergasted to say the least," said Marvin Cammon, one of the men who made the rescue.

"I'd say (they) probably (walked) a couple hundred yards. They did it fairly quick," said Pastor William Galus of Walnut Grove.

"There was a door open because it was a hot day, and I guess one of the day care worker's attention was diverted for a couple of minutes," said Galus.

Cammon said there's no excuse for what happened.

"Someone needs to be held accountable and there should be heads rolling. I think it should not stop here, in no way, shape or form," said Cammon.

Galus said no one is taking the incident lightly. They're conducting an internal investigation and will be taking disciplinary action. Galus added procedures will be put in place so this doesn't happen again.

The state's Department of Welfare is investigating. Channel 11 has learned the center's license is in jeopardy.

So lucky this ended well!
My church has a twice a week Parents Day Out program. I worked there for a couple of years with kids of varying ages.
I counted little heads constantly to make sure all of “my” kids were where they should be.
Awhile after I left, a 2 year old made his way from the building & was close to the street (about 2 acres from the building) when a lady driving by saw him, stopped, and brought him back inside.
Thing is, all doors in the PDO area are equiped with an “unlatch” bar only an adult can reach. This little boy left through the doors at the main entrance. They were supposed to be locked also. There is a call button outside if someone needs to come in. The doors were kept locked for a few months but the last time I popped in on a PDO day I was able to walk right in.
Parents leaving their children in the care of others, daycare or just for a few hours, should not have to worry about their child(ren)being able to sneak away from the caregivers.

I had a friend that had left her twin toddlers at daycare and the two managed to get out to the pool and both drowned.
