The Columbus Dispatch:An Internet romance and hopes for a better life led a young North Carolina mother to southern Ohio -- and her death.

Skeletal remains found July 12 near Otway in Scioto County have been identified through dental records as Nichole Ann Alloway, 20, of Spring Hope, N.C., Sheriff Marty Donini announced.

The woman went missing June 10, about three weeks after family members said she traveled to Portsmouth to meet a man with whom she had chatted for six months on the Internet.

The in-person relationship did not work out. Alloway was hours away from boarding a bus back to Spring Hope when she disappeared, said her grandmother, Diane Dille. Alloway's 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son remained in North Carolina.

"She had a good heart, but she was too trusting of other human beings," Dille said today. "I'm hoping they will get the guy or guys who did this. I want the death penalty for them. It would be an easier death than they gave Nichole."

Sheriff's Capt. Dave Hall said today that Alloway's death is considered a homicide and that several persons, including the man she traveled to meet, are being interviewed. A cause of death has not been determined pending the results of more tests, he said.

Dille said her granddaughter believed that she might be able to forge a new life with the man she traveled to Portsmouth to meet.

"She told me, 'I'm getting nowhere here. I want to make a better life for my kids. I want somebody who is going to be there for me and treat me right.'

"She was going to take the kids with her. Thank God she didn't," said Dille, who kept the children at her home in Spring Hope, northeast of Raleigh.

Dille said her granddaughter was last seen June 10, when she picked up $20 that she had wired to Nichole at a Kroger store in Portsmouth. She was heading to Ashland, Ky., to catch a bus.

She had spent the night in a homeless shelter after Portsmouth police stopped her and a man who was driving her to bus station on June 9. The man was arrested for drug trafficking, Dille said.

How sad for her family.
I met my current husband (I was widowed in 2003) through an online dating site. We chatted online for 2 months then by telephone for several weeks before meeting.
He then lived in a city 90 miles from mine but his parents lived in my town. I actually picked him up from his parents’ home for our first dinner date. The site of his parents waving bye to their 44 year old son from their porch was priceless.
We dated for a year before I introduced him to my daughters & dated for 3 years before we married.
It is important to think about safety when meeting someone in person from an online site. Because I had 2 daughters under the age of 6, I had a background check done before we met in person. He understood completely. Any woman, with or without children, must think of her safety first.

I will say, being a bit of an eternal optimist, there is a part of me that hopes she happened to be mugged by someone as she was leaving.

All the same, you should always watch out who you’re speaking to and with. The text, the video, even the phone can only convey so much. So be safe, be careful, and live.

Sadly this type of thing could happen meeting a guy at a bar or a club and does you just don’t hear much about it because its not as rare or eye caughting as something doing with Myspace. Its the internet you dont know who the person is on the other side of the screen and most times it will workout in that at least eveyone goes home but obviously just like a phone or club encounter there are times someone doesn’t. THere’s evil in the world it has nothing to do with myspace or dating or women or men or clubs or anything like that. THere’s risks.
