Get This! Your Back-to-School Grocery List

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Haylie Pomroy: I can't believe that summer is so rapidly coming to an end! We've had such a great time this year, sleeping in, hitting the road, visiting family, and just goofing around. As the school year approaches, I like to think of easy and healthy foods to add to my kid's lunches. Here are a few must-haves on my back-to-school grocery list.

Must haves on your back to school grocery list

Organic peanut butter/ nut butters

I always joke that we have more nut butter varieties in out house that the grocery store. We each seem to have a favorite. The nut butters are rich is fatty acids that are so important for kids brains, attention, and focus.Peanuts are grown in the soil unlike like almonds, walnuts, or cashews that grow high up in trees.Peanuts are considered the dirtiest of nuts containing mold and high toxin and this is why I encourage Organic.Spread this on whole grain crackers, sprouted grain pita or an English muffin and you have one "smart" lunch.Check out my website for the peanut butter wheat germ ball recipe, yummy!

Berries /fruits

The berries are so easy to transport to school and for the most part I am okay if you want to sprinkle a little bit of organic raw sugar or agave nectar on cut strawberries or berries of any kind. This lunch addition can give your kids good strong sustainable energy to make it thru the second half of the school day with out the crash of junkie sugary treats.
My daughter's favorite is to top these with hand whipped organic whipping cream. She likes to add a bit of vanilla, cinnamon, unsweetened coco powder, and stevia or raw sugar to sweeten.I can not tell you how many of the kids at the lunch table try to get her to trade this treat for their cookies and sweets.

Greek Yogurt

This is at the center of my daughter's favorite lunches and a super easy one for me to prep for school. It is rich in protein, calcium and good carbohydrates.Add some veggies and this is one power packed lunch.
The greek yogurt my daughter likes the Fage 2% plain then we add:
2 tbsps. Flax seed
2 tbsps. Wheat germ
½ Cup of blackberries
drizzle agave nectar over the top

Veggies

I really try to encourage parents to add a veggie at lunch time and or an after school snack
Three of my kid's favorites are:
Carrots and ranch dressing
Sliced red bell peppers dipped in ranch dressing or hummus
Sliced cucumbers sprinkled with sea salt
Don't forget dill pickles, these rich in potassium snacks can be great for growing bones.

Be sure to check out my website for healthy lunch ideas, snacks, breakfasts, and more.

Our family uses soynut butter because of our son’s peanut allergies and we LOVE it! YUM! I love to read all about healthy ideas for kids snacks as we are a family who eats lots of whole foods and avoid unhealthy chemicals. We even found a natural kids pain cream from Topricinkids and it works great for minor aches and pains. Anyway- with his Eczema and allergies we are always on the look out for natural recommendations! Thanks! smilinggreenmom *tweet me!!
